Abstract

Several ways are provided for a viewer of a movie to create a deep tag, that is, a bookmark for a segment of the movie. The deep tag can be associated with descriptive text and sent to an address provided by the viewer, either an e-mail address or an instant messaging address. Additionally, before the deep tag is created, it can be checked whether the content owner of the movie is known. If known, the content owner'"'"'s rules, if any, regarding deep tagging are followed. If unknown, a set of registered content owners can be alerted of the presence of new content. When ownership of the new content is established, the already-created deep tags can be updated in accordance with the content owner'"'"'s rules, if any, regarding deep tagging.

Claims

1. A method for enabling a viewer to create a deep tag for a segment of a movie, comprising:

providing an indicator for generating the deep tag representing the segment of the movie,

receiving an actuation of the indicator from the viewer,

creating the deep tag corresponding to actuation of the indication, and

storing the deep tag.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising associating descriptive text provided by the viewer with the deep tag.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending the deep tag to at least one address provided by the viewer.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the segment of the movie is a predetermined amount of the movie captured upon receipt of the actuation.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the predetermined amount is a frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the predetermined amount is a specified number of frames beginning with a frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein the predetermined amount is a specified number of frames ending with a frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs.

8. The method of claim 4, wherein the predetermined amount is a first number of frames preceding the frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs and a second number of frames following the frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the segment of the movie begins with a frame of the movie being presented to the viewer when actuation occurs and continues to the end of the movie.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a second actuation of the indicator from the viewer, and wherein the segment of the movie consists of the frames of the movie presented to the viewer between the two actuations of the indicator.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a de-actuation of the indicator from the viewer, and wherein the segment of the movie consists of the frames of the movie presented to the viewer between the actuation and de-actuation of the indicator.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving from the viewer settings of the start and end frames of a segment selector associated with the actuation of the indicator.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending the deep tag to at least one recipient.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the sending occurs via an electronic mail message including a hyperlink to the deep tag.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the sending occurs via a message that causes an icon to appear on a display associated with the recipient, the icon being associated with a hyperlink to the deep tag.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the sending includes asking the recipient whether the recipient will accept the icon.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the sending includes receiving change permission from the viewer specifying whether the recipient may change the deep tag.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising considering the deep tag when determining the popularity of the movie.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the deep tag is stored in association with viewer information.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein (a) when the viewer is an anonymous user, the viewer information is a cookie, (b) when the viewer is a casual user, the viewer information is an electronic mail address provided by the viewer, and (c) when the viewer is a formal user, the viewer information is a registration i.d. of the viewer.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising checking whether the movie has a known content owner, and, when the result of the checking is affirmative, the storing stores the deep tag in a known content owner deep tag database.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the checking includes comparing a movie-id-print of the movie with a known content owner movie-id-print database.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the movie-id-print is one of (a) a texture strip representing the movie, (b) a portion of a texture strip representing the movie, (c) a hash function applied to a texture strip representing the movie, and (d) a hash function applied to the movie.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising alerting content owners of the existence of the movie when the result of the checking is negative.

25. The method of claim 1, further comprising checking whether the movie has a known content owner, and, when the result of the checking is affirmative, the creating creates the deep tag in accordance with rules of the known content owner.

26. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining which other viewer is watching the movie, and updating the other viewer'"'"'s display of deep tags for the movie while the other viewer is watching the movie.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the updating is in accordance with a predetermined preference of the other viewer.
