ARTICULATING SUTURING DEVICE AND METHOD
First Claim
1. A suturing device comprising:
- a probe suitable for insertion along a tissue tract and into a vessel through a puncture;
at least one penetrator disposed within a portion of the probe, the at least one penetrator cooperating with a length of suture; and
an actuator cooperating with the at least one penetrator, the actuator being movable within the probe to deploy the at least one penetrator, the at least one penetrator becoming detached from within the portion of the probe.

Abstract
Devices, systems, and methods for suturing of body lumens allow the suturing of vascular puncture sites located at the distal end of a percutaneous tissue tract. An elongated articulated foot is inserted through a penetration and actuated extend the foot carrying suturing attachment cuffs. Needles are advanced from the shaft through the vessel wall outside of the penetration and into engagement with the needle cuffs after the foot has been drawn proximally up against the endothelial surface of the blood vessel. The cuffs lockingly engage the needles and can be withdrawn along the needle paths and through the tissue tract to form a loop of suture across the puncture. The articulating foot may be realigned with the shaft and withdrawn proximally through the tissue tract without dilating the tissue tract.

8. A suturing device comprising:
-
a probe suitable for insertion along a tissue tract and into a vessel through a puncture;
at least one detachable penetrator disposed within a first portion of the probe, the at least one detachable penetrator being detachable from within the first portion of the probe;
an actuator cooperating with the at least one detachable penetrator, the actuator being movable within the probe to deploy the at least one detachable penetrator; and
at least one flexible filament cooperating with the at least one detachable penetrator so that at least a portion of the at least one flexible filament passes through a wall of the vessel and is received by a bight of the at least one flexible filament. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)

14. A suturing device comprising:
-
a probe suitable for insertion along a tissue tract and into a vessel lumen through a puncture;
two needles disposed within a portion of the probe;
an actuator cooperating with the two needles, the actuator being movable within the probe to deploy the two needles into the vessel lumen, a portion of at least one of the two needles detachable from within the portion of the probe upon being disposed within the vessel lumen, wherein deploying the at least one of the two needles carries the length of suture through the wall of the vessel and into the vessel lumen. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
