Abstract

In various embodiments, a videoconferencing system may include a video capture device for capturing an image and a computer system for processing the captured image to produce a 3-D image. In some embodiments, the computer system may be coupled to the video capture device through a network and may process the image by forming image portions for projecting onto a moving surface. In some embodiments, the moving surface may move and a projector may project the image portions onto the moving surface. In some embodiments, the image portions projected onto the moving surface may appear as a 3-D image to a participant in the videoconference. In some embodiments, the 3-D image may be displayed through 3-D goggles or using other 3-D mediums.

Claims

1. A method for displaying a three dimensional (3-D) image of a participant in a videoconferencing system, the method comprising:

capturing an image of the participant at a first participant location, wherein the capturing produces first image data;

processing the first image data into processed image data viewable in a 3-D format;

displaying the processed image data at a second participant location in the 3-D format; and

wherein the displayed image data appears as a 3-D image to a participant at the second participant location in a videoconference.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting the first image data over a network from the first participant location to the second participant location.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting the processed image data over a network from the first participant location to the second participant location.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the processing the first image data is performed at the first participant location.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the processing the first image data is performed at the second participant location.

6. The method of claim 1,

wherein the processing the first image data includes forming image portions for projecting onto a moving surface;

and

wherein the displaying comprises projecting the processed imaged data onto the moving surface.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the moving surface is a panel rotating at least 30 rotations per second.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the processed image data at the second participant location comprises displaying the processed image data on an autostereoscopic display.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the processed image data at the second participant location comprises displaying the processed image data as a hologram.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the processed image data at the second participant location comprises displaying the processed image data through reality goggles.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein capturing the image comprises capturing at least two images using at least two video capture devices, and wherein the processed image data comprises data from the at least two images.

12. A videoconferencing system, comprising:

a video capture device for capturing an image of a videoconferencing participant;

a processor for processing the captured image into processed image data displayable in a three dimensional (3-D) format;

a 3-D image display device coupled to the processor; and

wherein the 3-D display device is operable to display processed image data to appear as a 3-D image to a participant in a videoconference.

13. The videoconferencing system of claim 12, wherein the processor is coupled to the video capture device through a network.

14. The videoconferencing system of claim 12, wherein the 3-D image display device comprises:

a projector;

a moving surface;

wherein the projector projects the processed image data onto the moving surface; and

wherein the projected processed image data on the moving surface appears as a 3-D image to the participant in the videoconference.

15. The videoconference system of claim 14, wherein the moving surface is a rotating panel.

16. The videoconference system of claim 14, wherein the moving surface is an oscillating panel.

17. The videoconference system of claim 12, wherein the 3-D image display device is an autostereoscopic display.

18. The videoconference system of claim 12, wherein the 3-D image display device is operable to display a hologram.

19. The videoconference system of claim 12, wherein the 3-D image display device is a pair of reality goggles.

20. The videoconference system of claim 12, comprising at least two video capture devices operable to capture at least two images using the at least two video capture devices, and wherein the processed image data comprises data from the at least two images.
