Abstract

A more efficient and user pleasant delivery of web content is realized for the transmission of markup language based files that include multipart information. Knowing that a receiving device maintains a cache of previously received objects, a markup language file is parsed to identify multipart objects prior to transmission. A cache simulator is established for each particular connection and is used to simulate the contents of the destination cache. Upon identifying a multipart object in a markup language file that is stored in the cache simulator, the object is filtered out of the file prior to transmission. The destination can pull this information from its local cache. Thus, the amount of information transmitted is reduced.

Claims

1. A system for accelerating the delivery of at least a portion of a web document defined at least in part by a multipart markup language file (ML), the system residing in a network that communicatively couples one or more servers with one or more clients, wherein at least one client includes a browser application for requesting a web document, the system comprising:

a module that is operable to;

receive a multipart ML file transmitted by a server and directed towards a browser equipped client;

modify the received ML file by removing eligible one or more multipart objects; and

transmit the modified ML file to the browser equipped client.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the module is adapted to evaluate a cache that is used by the browser equipped client.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the module includes a cache simulator and is operable to evaluate the cache of the browser equipped client by:

maintaining the cache simulator in an expected state as the cache of the browser equipped client.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the module includes a cache simulator and is operable to evaluate the cache of the browser equipped client by:

maintaining parameters pertaining to the characteristics of the cache of the browser equipped client;

configuring the cache simulator in accordance with the maintained parameters; and

maintaining the cache simulator in an expected state as the cache of the browser equipped client.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the module is operable to modify the received ML file by removing eligible multipart objects by examining the cache simulator for each multipart object and, if the cache simulator includes the multipart object, removing the multipart object from the ML file.

6. An apparatus for manipulating ML files prior to transmitting the ML files to their destination, the apparatus comprising:

a dispatcher module is operable to;

receive an ML file originated by a source and directed towards a destination,

dispatch the received ML file to be manipulated,

receive the manipulated ML file, and

transmit the one manipulated ML file to the destination;

a sessional module associated with the destination, and is operable to;

receive the dispatched ML file,

manipulate the dispatched ML file by removing one or more multipart objects out of the ML file, and

transfer the manipulated ML file to the dispatcher.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the sessional module includes a cache simulator and the sessional module is operable to manipulate the dispatched ML file by:

examining the cache simulator for each multipart object found in the ML file;

if the cache simulator includes the multipart object, removing the multipart object from the ML file; and

if the cache simulator does not include the multipart object, adding the multipart object to the cache simulator.

8. A method for transferring a markup language (ML) file that includes one or more multipart objects, the method comprising the steps of:

a. receiving an ML file from a server and that is directed toward a user device;

b. identifying at least one multipart object within the ML file;

c. determining whether the identified multipart object exist in the cache of the user device;

d. removing the multipart object from the ML file if it is in the cache of the user device; and

e. transferring the filtered ML file to the user device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the step of determining whether identified multipart object exist in the cache of the user device further comprises the step of evaluating the content of the cache of the user device.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the step of evaluating the content of the cache of the user device comprises:

creating a cache simulator;

storing content into the cache simulator, wherein the content is related to objects that are anticipated to be stored in the cache of the user device; and

examining the cache simulator to determine the expected contents of the cache of the user device.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the step of determining whether the identified multipart object exist in the cache of the user device is preformed by evaluating the behavior of the cache of the user device.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein evaluating the behavior of the cache of the user device is based on studying the behavior of the cache of the user device.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein evaluating the behavior of the cache of the user device is based on receiving information regarding the characteristics of the cache of the user device.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein evaluating the behavior of the cache of the user device is related at least one parameter selected from a group consisting of:

size and time.

15. A method for selectively sending objects to a remote device based on an evaluation of a cache that exists in the remote device, the method comprising the steps of:

a. storing local information identifying objects that have been sent to the remote device;

b. sending an object targeted to the remote device if the local information indicates that the cache of the remote device does not contain the object; and

c. filtering the object if the local information indicates that the cache of the remote device does contain the object.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the object is a multipart object.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the step of storing local information comprises creating and maintaining a cache simulator of the cache of the remote device.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the information identifying objects comprises at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of:

object identifier, object size, the first time of sending the object, the last requesting time for the object, date of the object, and date of receiving the object.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the step of sending the object further comprises updating the cache simulator with information that is identifying the object.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising the steps of:

d. studying the operation of the user device; and

e. adapting the cache simulator in accordance with the results of the studying.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the step of adapting the cache simulator comprises removing entries in the cache simulator module that are older than the entry of a filtered multipart object has been subsequently requested.
