Abstract

A hydraulic disc brake master cylinder having a bar clamp attached to a master cylinder housing allowing the attachment of the master cylinder to a handle bar along a longitudinal clamp axis. The master cylinder also includes a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing extending axially along the cylinder axis. The cylinder axis is not parallel to the longitudinal clamp axis. This embodiment further includes a reservoir for hydraulic fluid which includes a first wall which first wall includes only a radial portion of the cylinder exterior. The reservoir also includes an elastomeric diaphragm. The cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane substantially bisecting the first wall. Thus, the symmetric master cylinder lever may be disposed on either the right or left portion of a handle bar without effecting operation of the master cylinder lever by a user.

Claims

1. A master cylinder comprising:

a bar clamp attached to a master cylinder housing for attaching the master cylinder housing to a bicycle handlebar along a longitudinal clamp axis;

a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing, the cylinder wall comprising a cylinder interior and a cylinder exterior extending axially of a cylinder axis, the cylinder axis being non-parallel to the longitudinal clamp axis; and

a reservoir for hydraulic fluid comprising a first wall comprising only a radial portion of the cylinder exterior and an elastomeric diaphragm, wherein the cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane intersecting the first wall.

2. The master cylinder of claim 1 further comprising the cylinder axis being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal clamp axis.

3. The master cylinder of claim 1 wherein the cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane substantially bisecting the first wall.

4. The master cylinder of claim 1 further comprising the first wall facing a direction a lever pivotally attached to the master cylinder housing extends away from the master cylinder housing.

5. The master cylinder of claim 1 further comprising a hydraulic line having an opening into the cylinder interior which is substantially opposite the first wall.

6. The master cylinder of claim 1 further comprising means for varying an engagement point of a lever operatively associated with the piston traveling along the cylinder axis within the cylinder.

7. A master cylinder for a bicycle hydraulic disc brake comprising:

a bar clamp attached to a master cylinder housing for attaching the master cylinder housing to a bicycle handlebar along a longitudinal clamp axis;

a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing, the cylinder wall comprising a cylinder interior and a cylinder exterior extending axially of a cylinder axis, the cylinder having a first end and a second end and the cylinder axis being non-parallel to the longitudinal clamp axis;

a reservoir for hydraulic fluid comprising a first wall comprising only a limited radial portion of the cylinder exterior and an elastomeric diaphragm, wherein the cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane substantially bisecting the first wall;

a port between the first and second cylinder ends in the first wall providing fluid communication between the reservoir and the cylinder interior; and

a piston within the cylinder having a seal operatively associated therewith, the piston being moveable along the cylinder axis between the first and second cylinder ends, the seal preventing flow of hydraulic fluid from the reservoir to the second cylinder end upon the seal advancing axially past the port as the piston moves from the first toward the second cylinder end.

8. The master cylinder of claim 7 further comprising the cylinder axis being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal clamp axis.

9. The master cylinder of claim 7 wherein the first wall faces a direction a lever pivotally attached to the master cylinder housing extends away from the master cylinder housing.

10. The master cylinder of claim 7 further comprising a hydraulic line having an opening into the cylinder interior which is substantially opposite the first wall.

11. The master cylinder of claim 7 further comprising means for varying an engagement point of a lever operatively associated with the piston traveling along the cylinder axis within the cylinder.

12. A symmetric master cylinder for a bicycle hydraulic disc brake comprising:

a lever pivotally connected to a master cylinder housing such that actuation of the lever defines an arc of lever actuation with all points on the arc of actuation lying in a plane;

a bar clamp attached to the master cylinder for attaching the master cylinder housing to a bicycle handlebar along a longitudinal clamp axis;

a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing, the cylinder wall comprising a cylinder interior and a cylinder exterior extending axially of a cylinder axis, the cylinder having a first end and a second end and the cylinder axis being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal clamp axis;

a reservoir associated with the master cylinder housing comprising a first wall comprising only a limited radial portion of an exterior surface of a cylinder within the housing and the reservoir further comprising an elastomeric diaphragm, wherein the reservoir is substantially bisected by the plane;

a port in the first wall providing fluid communication between an interior of the cylinder and the reservoir; and

a piston within the cylinder having a seal operatively associated therewith, the piston being moveable between first and second cylinder ends along a cylinder axis between the first and second cylinder ends, the seal preventing flow of hydraulic fluid from the reservoir to second cylinder end upon the seal advancing axially past the port as the piston moves from the first toward the second cylinder end.

13. The master cylinder of claim 12 wherein the first wall faces substantially a same direction the lever extends from the master cylinder housing.

14. The master cylinder of claim 12 further comprising means for varying an engagement point of a lever operatively associated with the piston traveling along the cylinder axis within the cylinder.

15. A symmetric master cylinder comprising:

a bar clamp attached to a master cylinder housing for attaching the master cylinder housing to a bicycle handlebar along a longitudinal clamp axis;

a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing, the cylinder wall comprising a cylinder interior and a cylinder exterior extending axially of a cylinder axis, the cylinder axis being non-parallel to the longitudinal clamp axis; and

a reservoir for hydraulic fluid comprising a first wall comprising only a radial portion of the cylinder exterior and an elastomeric diaphragm, wherein the cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane intersecting the first wall and the reservoir is symmetric about the plane.

16. The master cylinder of claim 15 further comprising the cylinder axis being substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal clamp axis.

17. The master cylinder of claim 15 wherein the cylinder axis and the longitudinal clamp axis lie in a plane substantially bisecting the first wall.

18. The master cylinder of claim 15 further comprising the first wall facing a direction a lever pivotally attached to the master cylinder housing extends away from the master cylinder housing.

19. The master cylinder of claim 15 further comprising a hydraulic line having an opening into the cylinder interior which is substantially opposite the first wall.

20. The master cylinder of claim 15 further comprising means for varying an engagement point of a lever operatively associated with the piston traveling along the cylinder axis within the cylinder.

21. A master cylinder lever for a bicycle hydraulic disc brake comprising:

a lever pivotally connected to a master cylinder housing;

a bar clamp attached to the master cylinder for attaching the master cylinder housing to a bicycle handlebar along a longitudinal clamp axis;

a cylinder wall associated with the master cylinder housing, the cylinder wall comprising a cylinder interior and a cylinder exterior extending axially of a cylinder axis, the cylinder having a first end;

a reservoir associated with the master cylinder housing in fluid communication with the cylinder interior through a port in the cylinder wall, the reservoir comprising only a radial portion of the cylinder exterior;

a piston within the cylinder having a seal operatively associated therewith, the piston being moveable between first and second cylinder ends along a cylinder axis between the first and second cylinder ends, the seal preventing flow of hydraulic fluid from the reservoir to second cylinder end upon the seal advancing axially past the port as the piston moves from the first toward the second cylinder end; and

the lever, the bar clamp, master cylinder housing and the reservoir being configured to provide a symmetric master cylinder lever, whereby the master cylinder lever may be operatively disposed on either a right or left portion of a handle bar of a bicycle without effecting operation of the master cylinder lever by a user.
