Abstract

A system and method for providing a flexible licensing system for digital content is described. In some cases, the system utilizes tokens or other valuations to facilitate the purchase or exchange of content.

Claims

1. A system for facilitating exchange of digital items between a user and a content source, the system comprising:

a user component, wherein the user component contains a user storage component that stores a first digital item;

a content source component, wherein the content source contains a content storage component that stores a second digital item;

a valuation component, wherein the valuation component assigns a value for the first digital item that is different that an original value for the first digital item; and

an exchange component, wherein the exchange component compares the value for the first digital item assigned by the valuation component to a value for the second digital item and determines an adjusted value for the second digital component in exchange for the first digital component.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the first digital item and second digital item are licensed software products.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the first digital item and second digital item are audio files.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the first digital item and second digital item are video files.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the first digital item is a different type of digital content than the second digital item.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the valuation component assigns a value for the first digital item after receiving a request from the user to exchange the first digital item for the second digital item.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the valuation component assigns a value for the first digital item before receiving a request from the user to exchange the first digital item for the second digital item.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the valuation component assigns a value for the first digital item based on information related to previous values of the first digital item.

9. A method of facilitating an exchange of a digital object for credit related to other digital objects, the method comprising:

receiving information identifying the digital object, wherein the information indicates an original value for the digital object and a requested exchange value for the digital object;

determining an adjusted value for the digital object, wherein the adjusted value is different than the original value; and

exchanging credit related to other digital objects for the identified digital object when the requested exchange value does not exceed the adjusted value for the digital object.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the exchanged credit is related to the requested exchange value for the digital object.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the exchanged credit is related to the adjusted value for the digital object.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein determining an adjusted value for the digital object comprises determining the age of the digital object.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein determining an adjusted value for the digital object comprises determining the content of the digital object.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein determining an adjusted value for the digital object comprises determining the type of the digital object.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein determining an adjusted value for the digital object comprises determining the adjusted value of the digital object after receiving the requested exchange value for the digital object.

16. A method in a peer to peer network of facilitating the exchange of digital content between users of the network, the method comprising:

receiving an indication from a first user to make available digital content associated with the first user to other users of the network;

assigning a token-based value to the available digital content;

receiving a request from a second user to obtain the available digital content, wherein the received request contains an indication of exchangeable digital content having a token-based value; and

transferring the available digital content from the first user to the second user when the request to obtain the available digital content indicates a token-based value of the exchangeable digital content that exceeds the assigned token-based value of the available digital content.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein assigning a token-based value to the available digital content comprises identifying information related to historical values of the available digital content.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein assigning a token-based value to the available digital content comprises identifying information related to the age of the available digital content.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein assigning a token-based value to the available digital content comprises identifying information related to the content of the available digital content.

20. A system for exchanging digital content, the system comprising:

means for storing a first digital item;

means for storing a second digital item;

means for assigning a value for the first digital item that is different that an original value for the first digital item;

means for comparing the value for the first digital item assigned by the valuation component to a value for the second digital item; and

means for determining an adjusted value for the second digital component in exchange for the first digital component.
