Abstract

Method for treating a medical condition in a human patient comprising choosing a psychological strategy for treating the medical condition, encoding electronic instructions for an interactive video game in such a way that the interactive video game implements the psychological strategy, loading the electronic instructions into a microprocessor-based unit equipped with a display for displaying the interactive video game and with an patient input device for receiving responses to the interactive video game from the human patient, and instructing the human patient how and when to use the microprocessor-based unit to play the interactive video game. The interactive video game contains instructions for a scoring procedure for quantitatively analyzing the medical condition of the human patient, and/or counseling instructions or self-care instructions. The video game can be used in conjunction with a physical parameter measuring device connected to the microprocessor-based unit.

Claims

1. A diabetes management system, comprising:

(a) a blood glucose meter measuring blood glucose level data; and

(b) a portable microprocessor-based unit in communication with the blood glucose meter such as to be capable of accessing said blood glucose level data;

(c) wherein input data corresponding to said blood glucose level data is used in a program of instructions running on the portable microprocessor-based unit; and

(d) wherein said program of instructions includes instructions to send a signal to inject insulin based upon said blood glucose level data.

2. The system of claim 1, said program of instructions including instructions to send a signal to advance to next treatment steps.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein insulin is injected by a user.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein said user uses a syringe to inject said insulin.

5. The system of claim 1, said program of instructions including instructions to display an indicator to check blood glucose level on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

6. The system of claim 1, said program of instructions including instructions to display an indicator to select insulin plan on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

7. The system of claim 1, said program of instructions including instructions to display an indicator to get a menu of foods to eat on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

8. The system of claim 1, said portable microprocessor-based unit being connectable with a remote communication unit.

9. The system of claim 1, said portable microprocessor-based unit being remotely connectable with a hospital computer.

10. The system of claim 7, said portable microprocessor-based unit being remotely connectable with said hospital computer via a telephone line.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein said signal to inject insulin based on said blood glucose level data is sent when said blood glucose levels do not to remain in a predetermined range.

12. A method of diabetes management, comprising:

providing a blood glucose meter in communication with a portable microprocessor-based unit;

transmitting blood glucose level data into the portable microprocessor-based unit from the blood glucose meter;

running a program of instructions on the portable microprocessor-based unit;

inputting data based upon said blood glucose level data as input data for the program of instructions running on the portable 10 microprocessor-based unit; and

sending a signal including instructions to inject insulin when said blood glucose level data indicates.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising sending a signal to advance to next treatment steps.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising displaying an indicator to check blood glucose level on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

15. The method of claim 12, further comprising displaying an indicator to select insulin plan on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising displaying an indicator to get a menu of foods to eat on a display screen of the portable microprocessor-based unit.

17. The method of claim 12, further comprising connecting said portable microprocessor-based unit with a remote communication unit.

18. The method of claim 17, said connecting including remotely connecting said portable microprocessor-based unit with a hospital computer.

19. The method of claim 18, said connecting including remotely connecting said portable microprocessor-based unit with said hospital computer via a telephone line.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein said sending of said signal to inject insulin when said blood glucose level data indicates occurs when said blood glucose levels do not to remain in a predetermined range.

21. A diabetes management system, comprising:

(a) a portable microprocessor-based unit capable of accessing blood glucose level data therein;

(b) a remote communications unit in communication with said portable microprocessor-based unit;

(c) a program of instructions running on the portable microprocessor-based unit which uses as input data based upon said blood glucose level data; and

(d) wherein said program of instructions includes instructions to send a signal to inject insulin based upon said blood glucose level data.

22. The system of claim 21, further comprising a blood glucose meter signal coupled with said portable microprocessor-based unit from which said blood glucose data are downloaded.

23. The system of claim 21, said program of instructions including instructions to send a signal to advance to next treatment steps.

24. The system of claim 21, said program of instructions including instructions to run an operation to check blood glucose level.

25. The system of claim 21, said program of instructions including instructions to run an operation to select insulin plan.

26. The system of claim 21, said program of instructions including instructions to run an operation to get a menu of foods to eat.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein said signal to inject insulin based on said blood glucose level data is sent when said blood glucose levels do not to remain in a predetermined range.

28. A method of diabetes management, comprising:

providing a remote communications unit in communication with a portable microprocessor-based unit;

transmitting blood glucose level data into the portable microprocessor-based unit;

running a program of instructions on the portable microprocessor-based unit using data corresponding to the blood glucose level data; and

sending a signal including instructions to inject insulin when said blood glucose level data indicates.

29. The method of claim 28, further comprising signal coupling, a blood glucose meter with said portable microprocessor-based unit from which said blood glucose data are downloaded.

30. The method of claim 28, further comprising sending a signal to advance to next treatment steps.

31. The method of claim 28, further comprising checking blood glucose level as a result of running the program of instructions.

32. The method of claim 28, further comprising selecting an insulin plan as a result of running the program of instructions.

33. The method of claim 28, further comprising getting a menu of foods to eat as a result of running the program of instructions.

34. The method of claim 28, wherein said sending of said signal to inject insulin when said blood glucose level data indicates occurs when said blood glucose levels do not to remain in a predetermined range.
