Abstract

A method of supporting operation of sleep mode in a wideband radio access system is disclosed. More specifically, a mobile subscriber station (MSS) which determines a frame offset information for synchronizing listening windows of at least one MSS that is in sleep mode, and transmits the determined framed offset information to at least one MSS.

Claims

1. A method of supporting operation of sleep mode in a wideband communication system, the method comprising:

determining a frame offset information for synchronizing listening windows of at least one mobile subscriber station (MSS) that is in sleep mode; and

transmitting the determined frame offset information to at least one MSS.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising broadcasting a traffic indication message to at least one MSS during the listening window determined from the frame offset information.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the frame offset information is determined by setting a starting point of a listening window of a first MSS as a reference and adjusting a starting point of a listening window of a second MSS with the reference starting point.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the frame offset information is determined by synchronizing starting points of listening windows of at least two MSSs.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein synchronization includes adjusting and coordinating the starting points of listening windows.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the determined frame offset information is transmitted via a traffic indication message.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the frame offset information has a type length value (TLV) parameter.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the traffic indication message includes an identification for identifying at least one MSS.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the identification is sleep identification (SLPID).

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the identification is basic connection identification

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the determined frame offset information is transmitted by being included in a ranging response message.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the frame offset information has a type length value (TLV) parameter.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the traffic indication message includes identification for identifying at least one MSS.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the identification is sleep identification (SLPID).

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the identification is basic connection identification (CID).

16. A method of supporting operation of sleep mode in a wideband communication system, the method comprising:

receiving a determined frame offset information for synchronizing a listening window of at least one mobile subscriber station (MSS); and

adjusting a starting point of at least one listening window based on the determined frame offset information.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising ascertaining whether a message is transmitted from a base station (BS) during the listening window which is adjusted based on the frame offset information.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the frame offset information is determined by setting a starting point of a listening window of a first MSS as a reference and adjusting a starting point of a listening window of a second MSS with the reference starting point.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the frame offset information is determined by synchronizing starting points of listening windows of at least two MSSs.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the frame offset information is transmitted via a traffic indication message.

21. The method of claim 16, wherein the frame offset information has a type length value (TLV) parameter.

22. The method of claim 16, wherein the traffic indication message includes identification for identifying at least one mobile subscriber station.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the identification is sleep identification (SLPID).

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the identification is basic connection identification

25. The method of claim 16, wherein the determined frame offset information is transmitted by being included in a ranging response message.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the frame offset information has a type length value (TLV) parameter.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the traffic indication message includes identification for identifying at least one mobile subscriber station.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the identification is sleep identification (SLPID).

29. The method of claim 27, wherein the identification is basic connection identification

30. A method of supporting operation of sleep mode in a wideband communication system, the method comprising:

transmitting a sleep response message which includes information related to granting a mobile subscriber station sleep (MSS) to enter sleep mode; and

transmitting to the MSS information related to a starting point of a subsequent listening window during a current listening window, wherein the starting point of the subsequent listening window has been synchronized with a starting point of a listening window of at least one other MSS.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the subsequent listening window is synchronized based on a frame offset information.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the frame offset information is determined by setting a starting point of a listening window of a first MSS as a reference and adjusting a starting point of a listening window of a second MSS with the reference starting point.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the frame offset information is determined by synchronizing starting points of listening windows of at least two MSSs.

34. The method of claim 30, wherein the information related to a starting point of the listening window is transmitted via a traffic indication message.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the traffic indication message includes information for identifying the at least one MSS.

36. The method of claim 30, wherein the information related to a starting point of the listening window is transmitted via a ranging response message.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein the ranging response message includes information for identifying the at least one MSS.

38. A method of synchronizing by a mobile subscriber station (MSS) sleep mode of at least one MSS in sleep mode, the method comprising:

determining a frame offset information by using a starting point of a listening window of a first MSS as a reference to synchronize a start of listening window of a second MSS;

transmitting the determined frame offset to the second MSS.

39. A method of synchronizing by a base station (BS) sleep mode of at least one mobile subscriber station (MSS) in sleep mode, the method comprising:

determining a frame offset information by adjusting a starting point of a listening window of at least one MSS; and

transmitting the determined offset information to each MSS whose starting point of the listening window has been adjusted.

40. A method of indicating downlink traffic to a mobile subscriber station (MSS) that is in sleep mode, the method comprising:

transmitting a sleep request message to a base station (BS);

entering sleep mode by receiving a sleep response message from the BS, wherein the sleep response message includes a sleep identifier (SLPID);

receiving a traffic indication message from the BS at a specified time;

determining whether a SLPID included in the traffic indication message is same as the SLPID included in the sleep response message; and

terminating sleep mode if the SLPID in the traffic indication message is same as the SLPID included in the sleep response message.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the SLPID is a unique value within coverage of the BS.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the SLPID is assigned by the BS when the MSS enters sleep mode.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein the traffic indication message includes number of positive SLPIDs.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the number of SLPID is represented in 7 bits.

45. The method of claim 40, wherein the SLPID is represented 10 bits.

46. The method of claim 40, wherein the specified time is a listening window.

47. The method of claim 40, further comprising re-entering sleep mode if the traffic indication message is different from the SLPID included in the sleep response message.

48. The method of claim 47, wherein a listening window is updated by a sleep window update algorithm before re-entering sleep mode.

49. A method of indicating downlink traffic to a mobile subscriber station (MSS) that is in sleep mode, the method comprising:

receiving a sleep request message from the MSS;

granting the MSS to enter sleep mode by transmitting a sleep response message, wherein the sleep response message includes a sleep identifier (SLPID); and

transmitting at a specified time a traffic indication message to at least one MSS, wherein the traffic indication message includes a SLPID for a specific MSS.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the SLPID is a unique value assigned by the BS when the MSS enters sleep mode.

51. The method of claim 49, wherein the traffic indication message includes number of positive SLPIDs.

52. The method of claim 49, wherein the specified time is a listening window.

53. The method of claim 49, further comprising re-entering sleep mode if the traffic indication message is different from the SLPID included in the sleep response message.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein a listening window is updated by a sleep window update algorithm before re-entering sleep mode.
