Abstract

A device response template generator software program includes an interactive graphical-user-interface (GUI) for sending commands to devices under test and to capture and display the command responses. The GUI allows patternization of the command response to that the information contained in the response can be read, in the form of variable values, automatically, during subsequent execution of the commands by the same device or a group of devices. These values of the variables may be analyzed and may also be sent to other running testing scenarios.

In an apparatus for generating a device response template including a computer coupled to a device under test (DUT), a data storage coupled to said computer, and, a user interface for sending a command to said DUT and capturing a command response of said DUT, a method for generating a device response template for said DUT, the method comprising computer-implemented steps:

sending said command to said DUT;

capturing said command response from said DUT;

displaying said command response on a computer screen; and

patternizing said command response wherein patternizing includes marking a rectangular block of data in said command response and designating said rectangular block of data at least one of a command, a prompt, a table area, a line table, or a free format.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein said patternizing further comprising:

selecting a sub region in said rectangular block of data;

creating a variable corresponding to said sub region;

assigning a name to said variable;

assigning a data type to said variable;

storing said variable into said device response template; and

storing said device response template in said data storage.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is a free format.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is a table area.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is a marker.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is a prompt line.

12. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is a line table.

13. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is binary data represented by 2 hexadecimal characters per byte.

14. The method of claim 6 wherein said rectangular block of data is in structured text format.

15. The method in claim 9 further comprising:

providing a data query mechanism including, finding value of a table variable in a row in said table area selection for a given value of an another table variable in said row.

16. A method for analyzing a device under test (DUT) by executing a first testing scenario for said DUT comprising,

retrieving a device response template for said DUT from a data storage;

executing said first testing scenario using said device response template;

receiving a device response from said DUT;

parsing said device response using said device response template;

reading variable values through said parsing; and

displaying said variable values to a user on a computer display screen.

17. The method as recited in claim 16, wherein said analyzing said DUT further comprising executing a second testing scenario for said DUT and enabling said user to transmit said variable values to said second test scenario.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 wherein said first testing scenario and said second testing scenario are a part of a device test suite.

19. An apparatus for generating a device response template for a device under test (DUT) comprising:

a computer coupled to said DUT, wherein said DUT provides a support for a plurality of commands;

a data storage coupled to said computer to store said device response template;

a command user interface coupled to said computer to send selected ones of said plurality of commands to said DUT; and

a response capture user interface to display a device response from said DUT for said selected ones of plurality of commands,

wherein, said response capture user interface enables a user to mark a block of data in said device response.

20. The apparatus for generating a device response template as recited in claim 19, wherein said response capture user interface further comprising,

a user interface to enable said user to create a variable by identifying said block of data as said variable;

a user interface to enable said user to assign a data type to said variable;

a user interface to enable said user to store said variable to said device response template; and

a user interface to enable said user to store said device response template to a storage.
