Abstract

An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Claims

1. An analyte monitoring device, comprising:

a housing;

a data communication unit coupled to the housing and configured to periodically receive signals associated with a monitored analyte level;

a processor coupled to the data communication unit configured to process the periodically received signal; and

a display unit coupled to the housing for displaying one or more indicators associated with the monitored analyte level;

wherein the monitored analyte level is displayed at a predetermined frequency on the display unit.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency is greater than once every ten minutes.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency is about once every 10 minutes or less.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency is about once every five minutes or less.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency is about once per minute.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the displayed monitored analyte level frequency is modifiable.

7. The device of claim 1 including a storage unit to store the periodically received signals associated with the monitored analyte level.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the display unit is configured to display trend information associated with the monitored analyte level at a predetermined time interval.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the predetermined time interval is about a 10 minute increment or less.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the predetermined time interval is about a 5 minute increment.

11. The device of claim 8, wherein the trend information is displayed as one or more of a graph, an arrow, a composite indicator, a color indicator, and a bar graph.

12. The device of claim 1 including an input device coupled to the housing.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein display of the one or more indicators associated with the monitored analyte level is controlled by one or more input signals from the input device.

14. The device of claim 12, wherein the predetermined frequency associated with the display of the monitored analyte level is controlled by one or more input signals from the input device.

15. The device of claim 12, wherein a command provided by the input device modifies the predetermined frequency of the monitored analyte level display on the display unit.

16. The device of claim 12, wherein the input device includes a touch screen display, a keypad, a keyboard, one or more buttons, or one or more keys.

17. The device of claim 1, wherein the data communication unit includes a transmitter.

18. The device of claim 1, wherein the data communication unit includes a receiver.

19. The device of claim 1, wherein the data communication unit includes a transceiver.

20. A method, comprising:

periodically receiving one or more signals associated with a monitored analyte level;

processing the one or more periodically received one or more signals; and

displaying at a predetermined frequency one or more indicators associated with the monitored analyte level.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the predetermined frequency includes one of one minute, less than five minutes, five minutes, less than ten minutes, ten minutes, or greater than ten minutes.

22. The method of claim 20 including modifying the predetermined frequency.

23. The method of claim 20 including storing the periodically received signals associated with the monitored analyte level.

24. The method of claim 20 including displaying a trend information associated with the monitored analyte level at a predetermined time interval.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the predetermined time interval includes a five minute increment, or a 10 minute increment.

26. The method of claim 24 including displaying the trend information as one or more of a line graph, a directional arrow, a composite indicator, a color indicator, or a bar graph.

27. The method of claim 20 receiving an input signal to modify the predetermined frequency for displaying the one or more indicators associated with the monitored analyte level.
