Abstract

Various obesity treatment tools and methods are described herein, as well as treatments for other gastric-related diseases, e.g., GERD. Treatment includes reducing the size of the stomach pouch to limit the caloric intake as well as to provide an earlier feeling of satiety. This may be done by creating a smaller gastric pouch within the stomach directly from the interior of the stomach itself. The smaller pouches may be made through the use of individual anchoring devices, rotating probes, or volume reduction devices. A pyloroplasty procedure may also be performed to render the pyloric sphincter incompetent. A gastric bypass procedure may additionally be performed using atraumatic magnetic anastomoses devices so that sugars and fats are passed directly to the bowel while bypassing the stomach. Many of these procedures may be done in a variety of combinations. Treatment may create enforced behavioral modifications by discouraging the ingestion of high-caloric foods

Claims

1. A device for forming a lumen from an interior surface of an organ comprising:

a tissue adhering member having a proximal end and a distal end with a length therebetween, the tissue adhering member having a first rotatable section and a second rotatable section, the first and second rotatable sections are able to rotate from an open configuration to a closed configuration, wherein the first and second rotatable sections form a cylindrical body in the closed configuration;

a first attachment point in connection with the first rotatable section, and the first attachment point configured to grasp a first area of the interior surface of the organ; and

a second attachment point in connection with the second rotatable section, and the second attachment point configured to grasp a second area of the interior surface of the organ;

wherein the tissue adhering member positions the first area of the interior surface adjacent to the second area of the interior surface to form a lumen within the organ by rotating the first and second rotatable sections from the open configuration to the closed configuration.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the first area of the interior surface is in apposition to the second area of the interior surface.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the first and second rotatable sections rotate about a pivot.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the first and second rotatable sections are free from each other.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the first and second attachment points are tines, barbs, or hooks.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the first and second attachment points include an opening adapted to grasp tissue via a vacuum.

7. The device of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of attachment points connected to the first and second rotatable sections.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the tissue adhering member defines a lumen between the proximal end and the distal end.

9. The device of claim 1, further comprising an opening disposed on the tissue adhering member adapted to grasp tissue via a vacuum.

10. A device for forming a lumen from an interior of an organ comprising:

a cylindrical tube longitudinally split into a first half and a second half, wherein the first half and the second half are able to rotate from an open configuration to a closed configuration;

a first attachment point in connection with the first half, and the first attachment point configured to grasp a first area of the interior of the organ; and

a second attachment point in connection with the second half, and the second attachment point configured to grasp a second area of the interior of the organ;

wherein the device positions the first area of the interior adjacent to the second area of the interior to form a lumen within the organ by rotating the first half and the second half from the open configuration to the closed configuration after grasping the interior of the organ with the first and second attachment points.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the first area of the interior is in apposition to the second area of the interior.

12. The device of claim 10, wherein the first half and the second half of the cylindrical tube are joined together at a pivot.

13. The device of claim 10, wherein the first half and second half are free from each other.

14. The device of claim 10, wherein the first and second attachment points are tines, barbs, or hooks.

15. The device of claim 10, wherein the first and second attachment points include openings adapted to grasp tissue via a vacuum.

16. The device of claim 10, further comprising an opening disposed on the cylindrical tube adapted to grasp tissue via a vacuum.

17. The device of claim 10, further comprising a plurality of attachment points connected to the first half and the second half.

18. A method of creating a lumen from an interior of a stomach cavity, comprising:

inserting a tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the tissue treatment device having a cylindrical tube longitudinally split into a first half and a second half, wherein the first half and the second half are able to rotate from an open configuration to a closed configuration, and the tissue treatment device having a first attachment point in connection with the first half and a second attachment point in connection with the second half;

engaging a first area of the interior of the stomach with the first attachment point;

engaging a second area of the interior of the stomach with the second attachment point; and

rotating the first half and second half of the tissue treatment device towards one another and positioning the first area of the interior adjacent to the second area of the interior to form a lumen within the stomach cavity.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising fastening the first area to the second area of the interior of the stomach cavity to secure the lumen.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first half being joined to the second half at a pivot.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first half being free from connection to the second half.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first half is inserted separately from the second half.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first half and the second half are inserted simultaneously into the stomach cavity with the cylindrical tube in the closed configuration.

24. The method of claim 18, further comprising separating the first half away from the second half a selected distance within the stomach cavity to determine the desired size of the lumen.

25. The method of claim 18, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first and second attachment points are tines, barbs, or hooks.

26. The method of claim 18, wherein inserting the tissue treatment device transorally into the stomach cavity, the first and second attachment points include an opening adapted to engage tissue from the interior of the stomach cavity.
