Abstract

An improved handheld electronic device includes an Application Programming Interface (API) that generates various notifications in certain circumstances. The handheld electronic device provides an improved method of employing the notifications to enable another device to reflect an addition to a browser cache on the handheld electronic device.

Claims

1. A method of providing information regarding the content of a memory of a handheld electronic device, the method comprising:

requesting an object from each of a number of locations;

receiving information that a particular file has been stored in the memory;

deducing that a specific object has been stored in the memory by;

for each of at least some of the locations, seeking in the memory a file that comprises the location, and

making a determination that, for a specific location, the file that comprises the specific location is the particular file; and

responsive to said deducing, providing to another device an indication that the specific object has been stored in the memory.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing as said indication a representation of the specific location.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving from a routine as said information a name of the particular file and an indication that the particular file was added to the memory.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising obtaining a name of the file that comprises the specific location, and making as at least a part of the determination a determination that the name of the particular file and the name of the file that comprises the specific location are the same.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing to the another device a data set representative of at least a portion of the contents of the memory, and providing to the another device as the indication an update to the data set.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

storing on the handheld electronic device a data table comprising;

a number of first objects that each comprise a name of a file that comprises a location, and

associated with each first object, a second object that comprises the location; and

providing as at least a portion of the data set at least a portion of the data table.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising adding to the data table another first object comprising the name of the particular file and, associated with the another first object, another second object comprising the specific location.

8. A handheld electronic device comprising an input apparatus, a processor apparatus, and an output apparatus, the processor apparatus comprising a processor and a memory, the memory having stored therein a number of routines which, when executed on the processor, cause the handheld electronic device to be adapted to perform operations comprising:

requesting an object from each of a number of locations;

receiving information that a particular file has been stored in the memory;

deducing that a specific object has been stored in the memory by;

for each of at least some of the locations, seeking in the memory a file that comprises the location, and

making a determination that, for a specific location, the file that comprises the specific location is the particular file; and

responsive to said deducing, providing to another device an indication that the specific object has been stored in the memory.

9. The handheld electronic device of claim 8 wherein the operations further comprise providing as said indication a representation of the specific location.

10. The handheld electronic device of claim 8 wherein the operations further comprise receiving from a routine as said information a name of the particular file and an indication that the particular file was added to the memory.

11. The handheld electronic device of claim 10 wherein the operations further comprise obtaining a name of the file that comprises the specific location, and making as at least a part of the determination a determination that the name of the particular file and the name of the file that comprises the specific location are the same.

12. The handheld electronic device of claim 8 wherein the operations further comprise providing to the another device a data set representative of at least a portion of the contents of the memory, and providing to the another device as the indication an update to the data set.

13. The handheld electronic device of claim 12 wherein the operations further comprise:

storing on the handheld electronic device a data table comprising;

a number of first objects that each comprise a name of a file that comprises a location, and

associated with each first object, a second object that comprises the location; and

providing as at least a portion of the data set at least a portion of the data table.

14. The handheld electronic device of claim 13 wherein the operations further comprise adding to the data table another first object comprising the name of the particular file and, associated with the another first object, another second object comprising the specific location.
