Abstract

In general, the invention is directed to methods and articles for inspecting aircraft life vests using radio frequency identification technology (RFID). A user interface is described that renders information pertinent to the inspection upon a screen.

Claims

1. A computer readable medium comprising instructions executable on a processor of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) inspection device for:

generating, on a display of the RFID inspection device, a graphical representation of at least a portion of an aircraft, wherein the graphical representation includes visual indicia associated with expected life vest areas where at least some life vests are expected to be located within the aircraft; and

in response to information received by the RFID inspection device from an RFID tag associated with a life vest located within the aircraft, updating the graphical representation of the aircraft on the display of the RFID inspection device by changing at least one visual indicium associated with one of the expected life vest areas.

The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the visual indicium represents a state of at least one expected life vest location, wherein the state indicates the presence of a life vest, the presence of an improper life vest, the absence of a life vest, or the presence of an expired or soon-to-be expired life vest.

3. The computer readable medium of claim 1, wherein the graphical representation of the aircraft provides a graphical representation of individual seats, rows of seats, and aisles through the seats.

4. The computer readable medium of claim 1, the instructions further comprising:

generating, on the display of the RFID inspection device, and within the graphical representation of at least a portion of the aircraft, a visual indicium associated with the RFID inspection device.

5. A computer readable medium comprising instructions executable on a processor of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) inspection device for:

presenting, via a graphic interface, information concerning one or more aircraft profiles, where a profile is a data set that at least defines a seating and/or storage configuration of a portion of an aircraft;

receiving selection input specifying one of the aircraft profiles; and

,

upon receiving selection input, presenting further information contained within the aircraft profile.

6. The computer readable medium of claim 5, wherein the further information includes locations within the aircraft that life vests are expected to be located.

7. A computer readable medium comprising instructions executable on a processor of a handheld radio-frequency identification (RFID) inspection device with a memory for:

displaying in a user interface on the handheld device questions concerning the configuration of seating and/or storage of an aircraft;

receiving, as input, answers from a user for at least some of the questions; and

,

based at least in part on answers to the questions, developing in the inspection device'"'"'s memory, a representation of the configuration of the aircraft, said representation identifying locations of some seats and/or storage locations on the aircraft.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 7, the instructions further comprising:

displaying, in the user interface, a graphical representation of at least a portion of the representation of the configuration of the aircraft.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 8, the instructions further comprising:

updating the graphical representation based on input received from RFID interrogations of RFID tags.

10. A computer readable medium comprising instructions executable on a processor of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) inspection device for:

generating in a user interface a graphic representation of at least a portion of an aircraft, wherein the representation associates expected life vests with visual indicia; and

,

in response to input from an RFID inspection device, upon the graphic representation of the aircraft, changing at least one visual indicium associated with an expected life vest.

11. The computer readable medium of claim 10, wherein the visual indicium represents a state of at least one expected life vest, wherein the state indicates the presence of a life vest, the presence of an improper life vest, the absence of a life vest, or the presence of an expired or soon-to-be expired life vest.

12. A computer readable medium comprising instructions executable on a processor of a radio-frequency identification (RFID) inspection device for:

generating in a user interface a graphic representation of at least a portion of an aircraft;

receiving positional input defining a location within an aircraft; and

,

updating the user interface such that the location defined by the positional input is displayed in the graphic representation.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 12, wherein positional information is a row number.

14. A system comprising:

a user interface module that generates, on a display of an RFID inspection device, a graphical representation of at least a portion of an aircraft, wherein the graphical representation includes visual indicia associated with expected life vest areas where at least some life vests are expected to be located within the aircraft;

an RFID interrogation module that interrogates RFID tags and receives RFID tag information from the RFID tags; and

,

a validation and exception generation module, that in response to the RFID tag information read from an RFID tag, provides the user interface module new information concerning the graphical representation of at least a portion of the aircraft.
