Abstract

An improved handheld electronic device includes an Application Programming Interface (API) that generates various notifications in certain circumstances. The handheld electronic device provides an improved method of employing the notifications to enable another device to reflect a change to a browser cache on the handheld electronic device.

Claims

1. A method of providing information regarding the content of a memory of a handheld electronic device, the memory having stored therein a number of files that each comprise an object and a location, the method comprising:

storing on the handheld electronic device a data table comprising a number of first objects that each comprise a name of a file which comprises a location and, associated with each first object, a second object that comprises the location;

providing at least a portion of the data table to another device;

receiving a name of a particular file in the memory that has undergone a change;

obtaining from the data table the particular location associated with the particular file; and

providing to the another device an indication that reflects the occurrence of the change and that is with regard to the particular location.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving information that the change undergone by the particular file was a deletion of the particular file, and removing from the data table:

the first object that comprises the name of the particular file, and the associated second object.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising providing as at least a portion of the indication a representation of the particular location and a DELETE notification.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving information that the change undergone by the particular file was an updating of the particular file, and providing as at least a portion of the indication a representation of the particular location and an UPDATE notification.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising receiving from the another device an updating communication, performing an updating operation on the particular file and, responsive thereto, providing with a routine said name of a particular file in the memory that has undergone a change.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising performing as said updating of the particular file an updating of an expiration indicator, and providing as at least a portion of the UPDATE notification an updated expiration indicator.

7. A handheld electronic device comprising an input apparatus, a processor apparatus, and an output apparatus, the processor apparatus comprising a processor and a memory, the memory having stored therein a number of files that each comprise an object and a location, the memory further having stored therein a number of routines which, when executed on the processor, cause the handheld electronic device to be adapted to perform operations comprising:

storing on the handheld electronic device a data table comprising a number of first objects that each comprise a name of a file which comprises a location and, associated with each first object, a second object that comprises the location;

providing at least a portion of the data table to another device;

receiving a name of a particular file in the memory that has undergone a change;

obtaining from the data table the particular location associated with the particular file; and

providing to the another device an indication that reflects the occurrence of the change and that is with regard to the particular location.

8. The handheld electronic device of claim 7 wherein the operations further comprise receiving information that the change undergone by the particular file was a deletion of the particular file, and removing from the data table:

the first object that comprises the name of the particular file, and

the associated second object.

9. The handheld electronic device of claim 8 wherein the operations further comprise providing as at least a portion of the indication a representation of the particular location and a DELETE notification.

The handheld electronic device of claim 7 wherein the operations further comprise receiving information that the change undergone by the particular file was an updating of the particular file, and providing as at least a portion of the indication a representation of the particular location and an UPDATE notification.

The handheld electronic device of claim 10 wherein the operations further comprise receiving from the another device an updating communication, performing an updating operation on the particular file and, responsive thereto, providing with a routine said name of a particular file in the memory that has undergone a change.

12. The handheld electronic device of claim 10 wherein the operations further comprise performing as said updating of the particular file an updating of an expiration indicator, and providing as at least a portion of the UPDATE notification an updated expiration indicator.
