Abstract

Certain embodiments provide systems and methods for searching electronic medical data to identify a pool of potential study participants. Certain embodiments provide a method including the steps of receiving a plurality of search criteria, executing a search of electronic medical data based on each of the plurality of search criteria to create a pool of potential study participants and outputting the pool of potential study participants. In certain embodiments, the method may further include normalizing the plurality of search criteria according to at least one vocabulary. In certain embodiments, the method may allow a user to select the plurality of search criteria from a list of allowable criteria.

Claims

1. A method for searching electronic medical data to identify a pool of potential study participants for a clinical study, said method comprising:

receiving a plurality of search criteria;

executing a search of electronic medical data based on each of the plurality of search criteria to create a pool of potential study participants; and

outputting the pool of potential study participants.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising normalizing the plurality of search criteria according to at least one vocabulary.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of receiving further comprises allowing a user to select the plurality of search criteria from a list of allowable criteria.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said executing step further comprises executing an iterative search of electronic medical data using each of the plurality of search criteria to iteratively refine the pool of potential study participants.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the pool of potential study participants is a de-identified pool of potential study participants.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising re-identified one or more participants in the de-identified pool of potential study participants.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising inviting one or more of the pool of potential study participants to participate in a clinical study.

8. A system for identifying a pool of potential study participants, said system comprising:

a user interface allowing input of a plurality of search criteria and output of a pool of potential study participants; and

a data storage storing electronic patient data,

wherein said user interface triggers a search of said electronic patient data in said data storage based on each of said plurality of search criteria to create said pool of potential study participants.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein at least one of said user interface and said data storage is included in an electronic medical record system.

10. The system of claim 8, further comprising a vocabulary of allowable search criteria, said vocabulary used for at least one of normalizing said plurality of search criteria and selecting said plurality of search criteria.

11. The system of claim 8, where said electronic patient data is de-identified.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein said search comprises an iterative search of electronic medical data using each of the plurality of search criteria to iteratively refine the pool of potential study participants.

13. The system of claim 8, wherein the pool of potential study participants is a de-identified pool of potential study participants.

14. The system of claim 13, further comprising re-identified one or more participants in the de-identified pool of potential study participants.

15. The system of claim 8, wherein said user interface facilitates inviting one or more of the pool of potential study participants to participate in a clinical study.

16. A computer readable medium having a set of instructions for execution by a computer, said set of instructions comprising:

an input routine for receiving a plurality of search criteria; and

a search routine for searching electronic medical records to identify records matching each of the plurality of search criteria.

17. The set of instructions of claim 16, wherein at least one of said input routine and said search routine is implemented in an electronic medical record system.

18. The set of instructions of claim 16, further comprising a vocabulary of allowable search criteria, said vocabulary used for at least one of normalizing said plurality of search criteria and selecting said plurality of search criteria.

19. The set of instructions of claim 16, wherein said search routine executes an iterative search of electronic medical records using each of the plurality of search criteria to iteratively refine a pool of potential study participants based on records matching each of the plurality of search criteria.

20. The set of instructions of claim 19, further comprising a study routine inviting one or more of the pool of potential study participants to participate in a clinical study.
