Abstract

In one embodiment, there is provided a method for a media storage device to manage digital content. The method comprises determining if there is digital content to be categorized into one or more galleries; automatically categorizing said digital content into the one or more galleries; and for digital content categorized into a gallery with an auto-publish flag, sending at least one of said digital content and a derivative form of said digital content to a server.

Claims

5. The method of claim 5, wherein the galleries are generated automatically based on an organization of the memory.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the galleries are generated in response to user-input through a drag and drop interface.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the galleries are generated in response to an indication of the galleries received from a media acquisition device.

12. The method of claim 5, wherein preparing the digital content for publication comprises compressing the digital content to facilitate transmission thereof to the server.

14. A method for a media storage device to manage digital content, the method comprising:

receiving the digital content from a media acquisition device;

storing the digital content in a memory; and

automatically sending at least one of the digital content and a derivative form of the digital content to a server.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising first authenticating a user of the media acquisition device before storing the digital content.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising generating universal metadata associated with the digital content.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein generating the universal metadata comprises taking a time sample of the digital content;

and using the time sample to retrieve the universal metadata from a server.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein generating the universal metadata comprises generating a signature for the digital content, and using the signature to retrieve the universal metadata from a server.

19. The method of claim 14, further comprising generating the derivative form of the digital content.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein the derivative form comprises a compressed form of the digital content.

21. A media storage device comprising a processor and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions which when executed by the processor, cause the media storage device to perform a method for managing digital content, the method comprising:

determining if there is digital content to be categorized into one or more galleries;

automatically categorizing said digital content into one or more galleries; and

for digital content categorized into a gallery with an auto-publish flag, sending at least one of said digital content and a derivative form of said digital content to a server.

22. The media storage device of claim 21, further comprising first generating the galleries.

23. The media storage device of claim 22, wherein the galleries are generated automatically based on an organization of the memory.

24. The media storage device of claim 22, wherein the galleries are generated in response to user-input through a drag and drop interface.

25. A media storage device comprising a processor and a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions which when executed by the processor, cause the media storage device to perform a method for managing digital content, the method comprising:

receiving the digital content from a media acquisition device;

storing the digital content in a memory ; and

automatically sending at least one of the digital content and a derived form of the digital content to a server.

26. The media storage device of claim 25, further comprising first authenticating a user of the media acquisition device before storing the digital content.

27. The media storage device of claim 25, further comprising generating metadata associated with the digital content.

28. The media storage device of claim 27, wherein generating the metadata comprises taking a time sample of the digital content;

and using the time sample to retrieve the metadata from a server.

29. The media storage device of claim 27, wherein generating the metadata comprises generating a signature for the digital content, and using the signature to retrieve the metadata from a server.

30. A computer-readable medium comprising a sequence of instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a processor of a media storage device, cause the media storage device to perform a method for managing digital content, the method comprising:

periodically scanning a memory of the user storage device to identify digital content;

automatically categorizing any digital content identified by the scanning into one or more galleries; and

for digital content categorized into a gallery with an auto-publish flag, sending said digital content to a server.

31. A computer-readable medium comprising a sequence of instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a processor of a media storage device, cause the media storage device to perform a method for managing digital content, the method comprising:

receiving the digital content from a media acquisition device;

storing the digital content in a memory; and

automatically sending at least one of the digital content and a derived form of the digital content to a server.

32. A method for a media acquisition device, the method comprising:

capturing a new item of digital content;

categorizing the new item of digital content into one or more galleries; and

automatically sending the new item of digital content to a media storage device together with an indication of the one or more galleries, to enable the media storage device to categorize the new item of digital content into the one or more galleries.

1. A method for a media storage device to manage digital content, the method comprising:

determining if there is digital content to be categorized into one or more galleries;

automatically categorizing said digital content into the one or more galleries; and

for digital content categorized into a gallery with an auto-publish flag, sending at least one of said digital content and a derivative form of said digital content to a server.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining if there is digital content to be categorized into one or more galleries comprises periodically scanning a memory of the user storage device to identify said digital content.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein determining if there is digital content to be categorized into one or more galleries is based on a change notification which indicates that there is digital content to be categorized into the one or more galleries,

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising first generating the galleries.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically categorizing the digital content into galleries comprises mapping each item of digital content to a gallery.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the mapping is based on metadata associated with the item of digital content.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the mapping is based on a location of the item of digital content in the memory.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising preparing the digital content for publication before sending the digital content to the server.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising removing an item of digital content from a gallery if that item of digital content is deleted from the memory.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the one or more galleries are created based on a location of the media acquisition device.

33-1. The method of claim 32, further comprising generating a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) for each new gallery created on the media acquisition device.
