Abstract

Operating at least one low duty cycle (LDC) controller to maintain synchronization between the LDC controller and a plurality of LDC terminals operating over a communication network using only overhead channels of the network and conforming to the protocol and timing of said network, wherein synchronization between the LDC controller and the plurality of LDC terminals is maintained separately from the protocol and timing of the communication network, and enables the LDC controller to schedule power down and wake up of the plurality of LDC terminals for durations longer than allowable under the protocol and timing of the communication network.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

operating at least one low duty cycle (LDC) controller to maintain synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and a plurality of LDC terminals operating over a communication network using only overhead channels of said network and conforming to the protocol and timing of said network,

wherein said synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals is maintained separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network, and enables said at least one LDC controller to schedule power down and wake up of said plurality of LDC terminals for durations longer than allowable under the protocol and timing of said communication network.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said operating at least one LDC controller includes

transmitting network messages from said at least one LDC controller to said plurality of LDC terminals.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said operating at least one LDC controller includes

storing status information of each LDC terminal in a storage unit within said at least one LDC controller.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said status information includes

position information of said each LDC terminal.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein said status information includes

an operating mode of said each LDC terminal.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein said status information includes

a wake up time of said each LDC terminal.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein said status information includes

a wake up duration of said each LDC terminal.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said operating at least one LDC controller includes

coordinating wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals so that messages transmitted by said plurality of LDC terminals are substantially evenly distributed in time when received at said at least one LDC controller.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein said coordinating wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals includes

hashing the wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals with time offsets.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising

scheduling messages to be transmitted from said at least one LDC controller to said plurality of LDC terminals so that said messages are received substantially evenly distributed in time at said plurality of LDC terminals.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein said operating at least one LDC controller includes

scheduling a wake up time of each LDC terminal based on a usage profile of said each LDC terminal.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein maintaining synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network includes

maintaining a timing reference for each LDC terminal synchronized with said at least one LDC controller,

wherein said timing reference allows tracking of a wake up time for said each LDC terminal.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising

powering down an LDC terminal except for said timing reference when no LDC messages are expected to be received or transmitted over said overhead channels of said communication network for at least a predetermined period of time,

wherein said timing reference is configured to power up said LDC terminal when the wake up time is detected.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising

transmitting a keep alive message from said each LDC terminal to said at least one LDC controller when the wake up time is less than one day.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising

indicating and storing a reachability status flag for said each LDC terminal as reachable when said at least one LDC controller receives said keep alive message from said each LDC terminal.

16. A low duty cycle (LDC) network system, comprising:

at least one LDC controller operating to maintain synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals operating over a communication network using only overhead channels of said network and conforming to the protocol and timing of said network,

wherein said synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals is maintained separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network, and enables said at least one LDC controller to schedule power down and wake up of said plurality of LDC terminals for durations longer than allowable under the protocol and timing of said communication network.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein said operating at least one LDC controller transmits

network messages to said plurality of LDC terminals.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein said at least one LDC controller stores

status information of each LDC terminal.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein said status information includes

position information of said each LDC terminal.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein said status information includes

an operating mode of said each LDC terminal.

21. The system of claim 18, wherein said status information includes

a wake up time of said each LDC terminal.

22. The system of claim 18, wherein said status information includes

a wake up duration of said each LDC terminal.

23. The system of claim 16, wherein said at least one LDC controller coordinates

wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals so that messages transmitted by said plurality of LDC terminals are received substantially evenly distributed in time at said at least one LDC controller.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein said at least one LDC controller includes

a hashing unit to hash the wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals with time offsets.

25. The system of claim 23, further comprising

a scheduler to schedule messages to be transmitted from said at least one LDC controller to said plurality of LDC terminals so that said messages are received substantially evenly distributed in time at said plurality of LDC terminals.

26. The system of claim 16, wherein said at least one LDC controller includes

a scheduler to schedule a wake up time of each LDC terminal based on a usage profile of said each LDC terminal.

27. The system of claim 16, wherein each LDC terminal maintains

a timing reference synchronized with said at least one LDC controller,

wherein said timing reference allows tracking of a wake up time for said each LDC terminal.

28. The system of claim 27, further comprising

a keep alive message transmitted from said each LDC terminal to said at least one LDC controller when the wake up time is less than one day.

29. The system of claim 28, further comprising

a reachability status flag maintained at said at least one LDC controller for said each LDC terminal, said reachability status flag indicated as reachable when said at least one LDC controller receives said keep alive message from each LDC terminal.

30. A low duty cycle (LDC) network system, comprising:

means for operating at least one low duty cycle (LDC) controller to maintain synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and a plurality of LDC terminals operating over a communication network using only overhead channels of said network and conforming to the protocol and timing of said network; and

means for maintaining said synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network,

wherein said at least one LDC controller is enabled to schedule power down and wake up of said plurality of LDC terminals for durations longer than allowable under the protocol and timing of said communication network.

31. The LDC network system of claim 30, wherein said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals form an LDC network with the protocol and timing of said LDC network overlaid on top of the protocol and timing of said communication network.

32. The LDC network system of claim 31, further comprising

means for providing timing synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals to enable the protocol and timing of said LDC network to extend beyond the limits of the protocol and timing of said communication network.

33. A computer program, stored in a tangible storage medium, for operating a network using at least one LDC controller, the executable instructions comprising:

instructions that cause a computer to operate at least one low duty cycle (LDC) controller to maintain synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and a plurality of LDC terminals operating over a communication network using only overhead channels of said network and conforming to the protocol and timing of said network,

wherein said synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals is maintained separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network, and enables said at least one LDC controller to schedule power down and wake up of said plurality of LDC terminals for durations longer than allowable under the protocol and timing of said communication network.

34. The computer program of claim 33, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to operate at least one LDC controller include executable instructions that cause a computer to

transmit network messages from said at least one LDC controller to said plurality of LDC terminals.

35. The computer program of claim 33, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to operate at least one LDC controller include executable instructions that cause a computer to

store status information of each LDC terminal within said at least one LDC controller.

36. The computer program of claim 33, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to operate at least one LDC controller include executable instructions that cause a computer to

coordinate wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals so that messages transmitted by said plurality of LDC terminals are received substantially evenly distributed in time at said at least one LDC controller.

37. The computer program of claim 36, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to coordinate wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals include executable instructions that cause a computer to

hash the wake up times of said plurality of LDC terminals with time offsets.

38. The computer program of claim 37, further comprising executable instructions that cause a computer to

schedule messages to be transmitted from said at least one LDC controller to said plurality of LDC terminals so that said messages are received substantially evenly distributed in time at said plurality of LDC terminals.

39. The computer program of claim 33, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to operate at least one LDC controller include executable instructions that cause a computer to

schedule a wake up time of each LDC terminal based on a usage profile of said each LDC terminal.

40. The computer program of claim 33, wherein executable instructions that cause a computer to maintain synchronization between said at least one LDC controller and said plurality of LDC terminals separately from the protocol and timing of said communication network include executable instructions that cause a computer to

maintain a timing reference for each LDC terminal synchronized with said at least one LDC controller,

wherein said timing reference allows tracking of a wake up time for said each LDC terminal.

41. The computer program of claim 40, further comprising executable instructions that cause a computer to

power down an LDC terminal except for said timing reference when no LDC messages are expected to be received or transmitted over said overhead channels of said communication network,

wherein said timing reference is configured to power up said LDC terminal when the wake up time is detected.

42. The computer program of claim 40, further comprising executable instructions that cause a computer to

transmit a keep alive message from said each LDC terminal to said at least one LDC controller when the wake up time is less than one day.

43. The computer program of claim 42, further comprising executable instructions that cause a computer to

indicate and store a reachability status flag for said each LDC terminal as reachable when said at least one LDC controller receives said keep alive message from said each LDC terminal.
