Abstract

A system sends ad content to a publisher, where the ad content includes a first snippet of code. The system receives requests from browsers accessing a document at the publisher that includes the ad content, where the browsers send the requests based on execution of the first snippet of code. The system transmits, based on receipt of the requests, a second snippet of code to the browsers that instructs the browsers on a content, format and appearance of text to be inserted within the document when the browsers render the document. The system tracks each transmission of the second snippet of code to determine a number of times the text has been displayed at the browsers.

Claims

1. A method, comprising;

transmitting a first snippet of code to a publisher;

receiving a request message from a browser that has accessed a document at the publisher that includes the first snippet of code; and

transmitting a second snippet of code, based on receipt of the request message, that writes a portion of text into the document when the document is rendered at the browser.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second snippet of code includes instructions directing the browser to display custom branding and/or messaging when a cursor is “

hovered”

over the portion of text.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second snippets of code comprise hypertext markup language (HTML) or Javascript code.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of text includes a link and wherein the second snippet of code instructs the browser to write the link into the document with a specified format, appearance and content.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the specified format and appearance is similar to content already contained in the document.

6. A method, comprising:

providing content to a server across a network; and

subsequent to providing the content, providing code to a browser that writes text into a document that includes the content, wherein the browser has obtained the document that includes the content from the server.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the code instructs the browser to write the text such that the format and appearance of the text is similar to text already contained in the document.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the content includes one or more advertisements.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the code instructs the browser to write the text into the document when the document is visually rendered.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the code instructs the browser to write the text into the document with a specified format and content.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein the code comprises hypertext markup language (HTML) or Javascript code.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein the code is provided to the browser based on a text request received from the browser.

13. A method, comprising:

providing content to a server across a network; and

subsequent to providing the content, selectively controlling a content, appearance and format of text contained in the provided content from a remote location across the network.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the text includes a hypertext link.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein selectively controlling a content, appearance and format of the text comprises:

providing, from the remote location, code that renders the text in the content.

16. A method, comprising:

receiving a document that includes first code configured to request a link when the document is rendered by a browser;

sending a link request based on the code;

receiving second code corresponding to the link in response to the link request; and

visually rendering a link in the document using the second code.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the link comprises a hyperlink.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the first code comprises a snippet of hypertext markup language (HTML) or Javascript code.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the second code includes code specifying a content and format of the textual link.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the link includes a reference to an advertisement landing document.

21. A method, comprising:

providing ad content, wherein the ad content includes first code configured to request a link when the ad content is rendered by a browser;

receiving link requests from browsers at a plurality of clients;

sending second code to the browsers for writing a link into the ad content, wherein the link includes a reference to an advertising document.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

tracking each time the second code is sent to the browsers.

23. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

selectively disabling writing of the link into the ad content.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the link comprises a hyperlink.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the first code comprises a snippet of hypertext markup language (HTML) or Javascript code.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein the second code instructs the browsers to write the link into the ad content with a specific content and format.

27. A system, comprising:

a memory to store ad content, wherein the ad content includes first code configured to request a link when the ad content is rendered by a browser;

a communication interface coupled to a network;

a processing unit to;

provide the ad content via the network using the communication interface,

receive link requests from browsers at a plurality of clients via the network using the communication interface, and

send, using the communication interface, second code to the browsers for writing a link into the ad content, wherein the link includes a reference to an advertising document.

28. A method, comprising:

determining a format and appearance of text contained in a document stored at a publisher; and

sending code across a network to a browser, that has accessed the document at the publisher, where the code writes an advertisement into the document when the browser renders the document that has text similar in format and appearance to the text contained in the document.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the code writes the advertisement into the document that has text having a similar font, color and style to the text contained in the document.

30. A method, comprising:

sending ad content to a publisher, wherein the ad content includes a first snippet of code;

receiving requests from browsers accessing a document at the publisher that includes the ad content, wherein the browsers send the requests based on execution of the first snippet of code;

transmitting, based on receipt of the requests, a second snippet of code to the browsers that instructs the browsers on a content, format and appearance of text to be inserted within the document when the browsers render the document; and

tracking each transmission of the second snippet of code to determine a number of times the text has been displayed at the browsers.

31. A system, comprising:

means for transmitting a first snippet of code to a publisher;

means for receiving a request message from a browser that has accessed a document at the publisher that includes the first snippet of code; and

means for transmitting a second snippet of code, based on receipt of the request message, that writes a portion of text into the document when the document is rendered at the browser, wherein the second snippet of code instructs the browser to write the portion of text into the document with a format and appearance similar to other text contained in the document.

32. A computer-readable medium that stores computer-executable instructions, comprising:

instructions for providing content to a server across a network; and

instructions for selectively controlling, subsequent to provision of the content to the server, a content, appearance and format of text contained in the provided content from a remote location across the network.

33. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a document publisher, content that includes a snippet of code configured to instruct a browser to request text from a content syndicator;

associating the content with a document;

receiving a request to access the document from a browser; and

providing the document, including the snippet of code, to the browser over a network.
