Abstract

A display device includes a display panel; and a backlight panel provided below the display panel and defining a plurality of regions. A first array of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is provided along a first direction, each LED of the first array being coupled to a first line. A driver is coupled to the first line to drive the LEDs coupled to the first line. A second array of LEDs is provided along a second direction, each LEDs of the second array being coupled to a second line. A lighting condition of the regions defined by the backlight panel is controlled by turning on or off the LEDs.

Claims

1. A display device, comprising:

a display panel;

a backlight panel provided below the display panel and defining a plurality of regions;

a first array of light emitting diodes (LEDs) provided along a first direction, each LED of the first array being coupled to a first line;

a driver coupled to the first line to drive the LEDs coupled to the first line; and

a second array of LEDs provided along a second direction, each LEDs of the second array being coupled to a second line,

wherein a lighting condition of the regions defined by the backlight panel is controlled by turning on or off the LEDs.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of regions define a matrix of regions having an X number of rows and a Y number of columns.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein each region has at least one LED.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein each region has at least one LED cluster.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein each LED cluster includes Red, Green and Blue LEDs.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein at least one LED cluster has RGBB or RGBYC.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein at least one LED cluster has four or more LEDs.

8. The device of claim 6, wherein at least one LED cluster has five or more LEDs.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein each region has at least one LED, wherein the plurality of regions include first regions provided at a periphery and second regions provided proximate the center of the backlight panel, wherein the first regions and the second regions have different LED configurations.

10. The device of claim 6, wherein the second regions are provided with more LEDs per region and the first regions.

11. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a light guide panel that is shaped to spread the light emitted by the LEDs associated with the first array.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the light guide panel having a reflective surface on a side opposite to where the first array is provided.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the light guide panel and the backlight panel are the same.

14. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a third array of LEDs provided along the first direction, wherein the first array is provided proximate a first side of the backlight panel and the third array is provided proximate a second side of the backlight panel that is on an opposing side of the first side.

15. An array of light emitting diodes (LEDs), the array comprising:

a first array of light emitting diodes (LEDs) provided along a first direction in a backlight panel of a display device, each LED of the first array being coupled to a first line;

a driver coupled to the first line to drive the LEDs coupled to the first line; and

a second array of LEDs provided along a second direction, each LEDs of the second array being coupled to a second line,

wherein the LEDs are grouped in a cluster of at least three LEDs.

16. The array of claim 15, wherein the at least three LEDs include Red, Green, and Blue LEDs.
