Abstract

Systems and methods are described for a power aggregation system. In one implementation, a service establishes individual Internet connections to numerous electric resources intermittently connected to the power grid, such as electric vehicles. The Internet connection may be made over the same wire that connects the resource to the power grid. The service optimizes power flows to suit the needs of each resource and each resource owner, while aggregating flows across numerous resources to suit the needs of the power grid. The service can bring vast numbers of electric vehicle batteries online as a new, dynamically aggregated power resource for the power grid. Electric vehicle owners can participate in an electricity trading economy regardless of where they plug into the power grid.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

in a power aggregation system for distributed electric resources;

a line sensor associated with an electric resource, the line sensor to sense line power in a connection between the electric resource and a power distribution network;

wherein when a service of the power aggregation system signals the electric resource to generate power for the power distribution network and the line sensor senses no line power in the connection from the power distribution network, then a controller associated with the electric resource prevents the electric resource from electrifying the connection.

2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein when the connection between the electric resource and a power distribution network is unplugged, the line sensor and the controller prevent the electric resource from electrifying the connection.

The apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising a smart breaker between the connection and the power distribution network, wherein the smart breaker disconnects the breaker box from the power distribution network and communicates with the controller to enable the electric resource to generate backup power for a local load that has been disconnected from the power distribution network by the smart breaker.

4. The apparatus as recited in claim 3, wherein the local load comprises wiring and appliances of a home or business.

The apparatus as recited in claim 3, wherein the smart breaker further comprises a processor, a controlled breaker or relay, a communicator to couple with connected electric resources, a voltages sensor capable of sensing both the electric resource-side and power distribution network-side alternating current (AC) lines, a battery for operation during a power outage condition, and a battery charger for maintaining a charge level of the battery, wherein the controlled breaker or relay switches between power of the power distribution network and electric resource-provided power when signaled by the processor.

The apparatus as recited in claim 3, wherein the smart breaker disconnects multiple connections between multiple electric resources and the power distribution system and communicates with multiple controllers associated with the multiple electric resources to enable the multiple electric resources to generate backup power for a relatively large local load that has been disconnected from the power distribution network by the smart breaker.

8. The apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein the relatively large local load is one of:

at least part of a hospital, a communications facility, a traffic signaling system, an emergency broadcast system, or a business.

9. The apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein the smart breaker assigns one of the multiple controllers to be a master and the other controllers to be slaves of the master, wherein the master generates a reference AC signal that the slaves follow.

10. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein when an electric resource associated with the controller that has been assigned as master leaves the power distribution network, the smart breaker assigns one of the slaves to be a new master.

5. The apparatus as recited in 3, wherein when the power distribution network returns to operation, the smart breaker communicates with the controller of the electric resource to disable the backup power generation and reconnects the connection to the power distribution network.

11. A method, comprising:

in a power aggregation system for distributed electric resources;

sensing no line power in a connection between an electric resource and a power distribution network; and

signaling a controller associated with the electric resource to prevent the electric resource from electrifying the connection.

12. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising signaling the controller to prevent the electric resource from electrifying the connection when the connection is unplugged or a conductor of the connection is exposed to a user.

13. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising disconnecting the electrical resource and a local load from the power distribution network and communicating with the controller to enable the electric resource to generate backup power for the local load.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein the local load comprises an electrical system of a home or a business.

16. The method as recited in claim 13, further comprising disconnecting multiple connections between multiple electric resources and the power distribution system and communicating with multiple controllers associated with the multiple electric resources to enable the multiple electric resources to generate backup power for a local load.

17. The method as recited in claim 16, further comprising assigning one of the multiple controllers to be a master and the other controllers to be slaves of the master, wherein the master generates a reference signal that the slaves follow.

18. The method as recited in claim 17, wherein when an electric resource associated with the controller that has been assigned as master leaves the power distribution network, then assigning one of the slaves to be a new master.

15. The method as recited in 3, wherein when the power distribution network returns to operation, communicating with the controller of the electric resource to disable the backup power generation and reconnecting the connection to the power distribution network.
