Abstract

Embodiments are described in connection with transferring data traditionally communicated through a wired link over a high-speed wireless link. The disclosed embodiments provide the wired and/or wireless data communication with minimal changes on the existing wired architecture. According to an embodiment is an apparatus for communicating wirelessly over a traditional wired link. The apparatus includes a transmitter comprising a host and a first portion of a client connected by a wired link and a receiver comprising a second portion of the client. According to some embodiments, the apparatus can include a query module that determines an operation rate based in part on a rate supported by a medium access control and a retransmission statistic and an assigner module that assigns a communication to a wired protocol or a wireless protocol.

Claims

1. A method for wirelessly communicating digital data at a high rate between a host entity and at least one remote user interface client device for user interface data, comprising:

associating the at least one remote user interface client device with the host entity;

sending a capability packet to the host entity that includes at least one capability of the at least one remote user interface client device; and

transmitting a status packet to the host entity that includes at least one link quality information.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request from the host entity for an updated status packet;

updating the status packet; and

sending the updated status packet to the host entity in response to the received request.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

determining an association between the at least one remote user interface client device and the host entity is broken when a host entity status packet is not received within a predetermined period; and

disassociating the at least one remote user interface client device from the host entity.

4. The method of claim 1, associating the remote user interface client device with the host entity, comprising:

sending an association request packet to the host entity; and

resending the association request packet if an association timer expires before an association response packet is received from the host entity in response to the sent association request packet.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending an updated status packet periodically or when a status change is detected.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining if a communication between the at least one remote user interface client device and the host entity should be stopped;

disassociating with the host entity if the communication should be stopped; and

entering a disassociated state.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

sending a dissociation request to the host entity; and

receiving a dissociation response from the host entity.

8. An apparatus that communicates high rate digital data wirelessly, comprising:

a memory that stores information related to a first MAC address associated with the apparatus and at least a second MAC address associated with a remote host device;

a processor that analyzes information stored in the memory and selectively associates the apparatus with the remote host device; and

a communication data component that updates a MAC response packet with apparatus-MAC statistics for transmission to the remote host device.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a display component that compiles at least one alternate display information associated with the apparatus and conveys the at least one alternate display information to the remote host device.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, the processor associates the apparatus with the remote host device after receipt of an associated request packet from the remote host device.

11. The apparatus of claim 8, the processor does not associate the apparatus with the remote host device when an association response packet is not received from the remote host device after a predetermined interval and a maximum number of sent association requests are exceeded.

12. The apparatus of claim 8, the processor further selectively dissociates the apparatus from the remote host device when a remote host device status packet is not received in response to the transmitted updated MAC-response packet.

13. The apparatus of claim 8, the processor dissociates the apparatus from the remote host device upon receipt of a dissociation request packet from the remote host device.

14. An apparatus that wirelessly communicates high rate user interface data, comprising:

means for associating at least one receiver with a remote sender;

means for communicating at least one capability information of the at least one receiver wirelessly to the remote sender;

means for sending at least one link quality data packet periodically to the remote sender; and

means for selectively disassociating with the remote sender.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising means for receiving a link quality data packet from the remote sender in response to the at least one link quality data packet.

16. A computer-readable medium embodying a method for wirelessly transmitting high rate user interface data, the method comprising:

associating at least one remote user interface device with a host;

sending a first packet that includes capability information of the at least one remote user interface device; and

sending at least a second packet periodically that includes quality data of a communication link between the at least one remote user interface device and the host.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, the method further comprising:

sending a disassociation request to the host; and

receiving a confirmation of the disassociation request from the host.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, the method further comprising receiving an acknowledgment of the first packet that includes an identification reference for the at least one remote user interface device.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, further comprising:

receiving a confirmation of the at least a second packet from the host; and

determining the at least one remote user interface is not associated with the host when the link quality data packet from the host is not received from the host in response to a pre-determined number of link quality data packets sent by the at least one user interface device; and

disassociating the at least one remote user interface from the host.

20. A processor for communicating high rate user interface data wirelessly, the processor being configured to:

associate an interface device with a remote host;

send information about a capability of the interface device in a capability packet; and

transmit a status packet comprising data about a communication link between the interface device and the remote host.

21. The processor of claim 20, further being configured to:

determine whether the communication link between the interface device and the remote host does not meet a predetermined quality level;

send a dissociation request to the remote host; and

disassociate from the remote host.

22. A method for high rate wireless digital data communication between a sender and at least one remote receiver for user interface data, comprising:

associating with the at least one remote receiver;

receiving a first packet that includes at least one capability of the at least one remote receiver; and

receiving a link quality information packet on a reverse link from the at least one remote receiver.

23. The method of claim 22, associating with the at least one remote receiver further comprising:

transmitting a first association request packet to the at least one remote receiver;

tracking an interval of time between transmitting the first association request packet and receipt of an association request reply packet; and

transmitting a second association request packet if the interval of time between transmitting the first association request packet and receipt of the association request reply packet exceeds a predetermined interval.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising including a MAC address of the sender and an identification of the at least one remote receiver in a device association table associated with the sender.

25. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

determining that communication with the at least one remote receiver should be disabled;

sending a sender dissociation request packet to the at least one remote receiver;

receiving a dissociation request reply from the at least one remote receiver in response to the sender dissociation request packet; and

sending an acknowledgment of a dissociation completion to the at least one remote receiver.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

receiving a dissociation request from the at least one remote receiver;

sending a dissociation response acknowledging the dissociation request; and

removing an identification of the at least one remote receiver from an association table.

27. An apparatus that wirelessly communicates high rate user interface data, comprising:

a memory that stores information related to an identification of at least one remote user interface device;

a processor that selectively associates with the at least one remote user interface device based in part on the stored information; and

an information component that analyzes at least one capability of the at least one remote user interface device received in a client capability packet.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, the information component further analyzes a link quality information data received in a status update packet.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, the processor selectively dissociates with the at least one remote user interface device if the link quality information data indicates that the quality of a communication link has fallen below a predetermined threshold.

30. The apparatus of claim 27, further comprising a status timer that determines if a response to a first sender association request is received within a predefined interval, the processor sends at least a second sender association request if the response is not received within the predefined interval.

31. An apparatus that wirelessly communicates user interface data at a high rate, comprising:

means for selectively associating with at least one remote user interface device;

means for sending an association response to the at least one remote user interface device, the association response contains a client identification for the at least one remote user interface device;

means for receiving the first capability packet; and

means for associating the at least one remote user interface device with an identification based in part on at least one capability included in the first capability packet.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, further comprising:

means for determining if the first capability packet is received within a predefined interval; and

means for sending a second request for the capability packet.

33. The apparatus of claim 31, further comprising:

means for determining if an association with the at least one remote user interface device should be stopped; and

means for selectively dissociating from the at least one remote user interface device if the association should be stopped.

34. A computer-readable medium embodying a method for wirelessly transmitting high rate user interface data, the method comprising:

associating a host device with at least one remote client device;

receiving a first packet that includes capability information of the at least one remote client device;

assigning a client identification to the at least one remote client device based in part on the first packet; and

receiving a second packet that includes quality data information of a communication link between the host device and the at least one remote client device.

35. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, further comprising:

sending a disassociation request to the at least one remote client device; and

receiving a confirmation of the disassociation request from the at least one remote client device.

36. The computer-readable medium of claim 34, further comprising:

determining that the at least one remote user interface device is not associated with the host device when the second packet is not received within a predefined interval; and

dissociating from the at least one remote user interface device.

37. A processor for wirelessly communicating high rate user interface data, the processor being configured to:

associate a host with a remote interface device;

receive information about a capability of the remote interface device;

assign an identifier to the remote interface device;

send the identifier to the remote interface device; and

receive in a status packet information about a communication link between the remote interface device and the host.

38. The processor of claim 37, further configured to:

determine whether a communication between the remote interface device and the host should be stopped;

send a dissociate request to the remote interface device if the communicate should be stopped; and

remove the assigned identifier of the remote interface device.
