Abstract

A method for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network includes establishing a first wireless connection with a base station using a first channel and establishing a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel. The method also includes receiving via the first wireless connection using the first channel a modification request message from the base station requesting a modification of at least one parameter of the second wireless connection with the endpoint using the second channel. The method further includes notifying the endpoint that at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel will be modified. In addition, the method includes modifying the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

Claims

1. A method for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

establishing a first wireless connection with a base station using a first channel;

establishing a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

receiving via the first wireless connection using the first channel a modification request message from the base station requesting a modification of at least one parameter of the second wireless connection with the endpoint using the second channel;

notifying the endpoint that at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel will be modified; and

modifying the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending the base station an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

receiving from the base station an updated identity message comprising a new identity and the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

forwarding to the endpoint the updated identity message;

sending to the endpoint a handover request message, the handover request message requesting that the endpoint use the modified second wireless connection; and

using the new identity in establishing a connection with the endpoint via the modified second wireless connection using the second channel.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

starting a first timer; and

upon the first timer expiring before receiving the updated identity message sending a repeat affirmative response to the base station indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

4. The method of claim 2:

further comprising starting a second timer; and

upon the second timer expiring, modifying the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending a negative response to the base station indicating the requested modification will not be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first wireless connection and the second wireless connection utilize 802.16 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX).

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

10. A method for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

establishing a first wireless connection with a relay station using a first channel, the relay station having established a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

identifying a modification trigger for at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel; and

sending a modification request message to the relay station via the first wireless connection using the first channel requesting that the relay station modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

11. The method of claim 10:

wherein the relay station is associated with a first identity; and

further comprising, upon receiving an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

creating a second identity for the relay station; and

broadcasting an updated identity message comprising the second identity for the relay station and the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the first wireless connection and the second wireless connection utilize 802.16 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX).

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

16. A system for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

an interface operable to;

establish a first wireless connection with a base station using a first channel;

establish a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

receive via the first wireless connection using the first channel a modification request message from the base station requesting a modification of at least one parameter of the second wireless connection with the endpoint using the second channel; and

notify the endpoint that at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel will be modified; and

a processor coupled to the interface and operable to modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the interface is further operable to:

send the base station an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

receive from the base station an updated identity message comprising a new identity and the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

forward to the endpoint the updated identity message;

send to the endpoint a handover request message, the handover request message requesting that the endpoint use the modified second wireless connection; and

use the new identity to establish a connection with the endpoint via the modified second wireless connection using the second channel.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein:

the processor is further operable to start a first timer; and

the interface is further operable to, upon the first timer expiring before receiving the updated identity message, send a repeat affirmative response to the base station indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the processor is further operable to:

start a second timer; and

upon the second timer expiring, modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

21. The system of claim 16, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

22. The system of claim 16, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

23. A system for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

an interface operable to establish a first wireless connection with a relay station using a first channel, the relay station comprising a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

a processor coupled to the interface and operable to identify a modification trigger for at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel; and

wherein the interface is further operable to send a modification request message to the relay station via the first wireless connection using the first channel requesting that the relay station modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein:

the relay station is associated with a first identity;

the processor is further operable to, upon receiving an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel, create a second identity for the relay station; and

the interface is further operable to broadcast an updated identity message comprising the second identity for the relay station and the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

26. The system of claim 23, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

27. The system of claim 23, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

28. Logic embodied in a computer readable medium, the computer readable medium comprising code operable to:

establish a first wireless connection with a base station using a first channel;

establish a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

receive via the first wireless connection using the first channel a modification request message from the base station requesting a modification of at least one parameter of the second wireless connection with the endpoint using the second channel;

notify the endpoint that at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel will be modified; and

modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

29. The medium of claim 28, wherein the code is further operable to:

send the base station an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

receive from the base station an updated identity message comprising a new identity and the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

forward to the endpoint the updated identity message;

send to the endpoint a handover request message, the handover request message requesting that the endpoint use the modified second wireless connection; and

use the new identity in establishing a connection with the endpoint via the modified second wireless connection using the second channel.

30. The medium of claim 29, wherein the code is further operable to:

start a first timer; and

upon the first timer expiring before receiving the updated identity message, send a repeat affirmative response to the base station indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

31. The medium of claim 29, wherein the code is further operable to:

start a second timer; and

upon the second timer expiring, modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

32. The medium of claim 29, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

33. The medium of claim 28, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

34. The medium of claim 29, wherein the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

35. Logic embodied in a computer readable medium, the computer readable medium comprising code operable to:

establish a first wireless connection with a relay station using a first channel, the relay station having established a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

identify a modification trigger for at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel; and

send a modification request message to the relay station via the first wireless connection using the first channel requesting that the relay station modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

36. The medium of claim 35, wherein:

the relay station is associated with a first identity; and

the code is further operable to, upon receiving an affirmative response indicating the requested modification will be made to the at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel;

create a second identity for the relay station; and

broadcast an updated identity message comprising the second identity for the relay station and the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

37. The medium of claim 36, wherein the updated identity message comprises a mobility neighborhood advertisement (MOB_NBR-ADV).

38. The medium of claim 35, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified center frequency of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

39. The medium of claim 35, wherein the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel comprises a modified bandwidth of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

40. A system for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

means for establishing a first wireless connection with a base station using a first channel;

means for establishing a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

means for receiving via the first wireless connection using the first channel a modification request message from the base station requesting a modification of at least one parameter of the second wireless connection with the endpoint using the second channel;

means for notifying the endpoint that at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel will be modified; and

means for modifying the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the modified at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.

41. A system for adjusting connection parameters in a wireless network, comprising:

means for establishing a first wireless connection with a relay station using a first channel, the relay station having established a second wireless connection with an endpoint using a second channel;

means for identifying a modification trigger for at least one parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel; and

means for sending a modification request message to the relay station via the first wireless connection using the first channel requesting that the relay station modify the second wireless connection using the second channel to comprise the at least one modified parameter of the second wireless connection using the second channel.
