First Claim
1. A needle injector device for connection in fluid-flow communication with the inlet or outlet port of a reservoir, the needle injector comprising:
- a housing having a generally cylindrical interior surface surrounding a generally cylindrical hollow interior volume, the generally cylindrical interior surface having a central axis, an inner circumference, a first groove forming a generally spiral path around at least a portion of the inner circumference and a second groove extending in a generally linear path that is generally parallel to the central axis;
a moveable cam member supported for movement with in the interior volume of the housing between a retracted position and an extended position, the cam member having a projection for extending into the first and second grooves, the cam member for supporting a needle for movement with the cam member between the retracted position and extended position;
at least one bias member for imparting on the moveable cam member, a rotary force around the central axis and a linear force in a direction parallel to the central axis, when the moveable cam member is in the retracted position;
a stop structure for engaging and holding the moveable cam member in the retracted position;
wherein, when the moveable cam member is held in the retracted position by the stop surface, the moveable cam member is arranged relative to the generally cylindrical interior surface, to be selectively disengaged from the stop structure and moved from the retracted position to the extended position, in a rotary direction around the central axis and simultaneously in a direction generally parallel to the central axis, while the cam projection follows the spiral path of the first groove; and
wherein, when the moveable cam member is in the extended position, the moveable cam member is arranged relative to the generally cylindrical interior surface, to be moved from the extended position toward the retracted position, in a generally linear direction that is generally parallel to the central axis, while the cam projection follows the generally linear path of the second groove. linear

Abstract
An infusion medium delivery system, device and method for delivering an infusion medium to a patient-user, includes a needle inserter device and method for inserting a needle and/or cannula into a patient-user to convey the infusion medium to the patient-user. The needle inserter device and method operate to insert a needle and cannula into a patient-user'"'"'s skin and automatically withdraw the needle from the patient-user, leaving the cannula in place and in fluid flow communication with a reservoir. The delivery device may include a base portion and a durable portion connectable to the base portion, and wherein the base portion can be separated from the durable portion and disposed of after one or more specified number of uses. The base portion supports the reservoir and the needle inserter device, while the durable portion supports a drive device for selectively driving the infusion medium out of the reservoir and into the needle and/or cannula.
