Abstract

A method and system for reducing interference in a cellular radio communications network. At least one parameter affecting user terminals within a cell is adjusted such that the cell boundary is modified, such that interference in the network is reduced. In alternative embodiments the at least one parameter is adjusted adaptively.

Claims

1. A method for reducing inter-cell interference in a cellular radio communications network comprising:

receiving an indication of an increase in an inter-cell interference between a first user terminal, being served by a first cell, and a second user terminal, being served by a second cell; and

adaptively adjusting a pilot power of one or both of the first cell and the second cell to modify a cell boundary of one or both of the first cell and the second cell such that the inter-cell interference is reduced.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

adaptively adjusting an antenna parameter of one or both of the first cell and the second cell to further modify a cell boundary of one or both of the first cell and the second cell.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the antenna parameter is selected from the group consisting of an antenna downtilt, an antenna azimuth, an antenna pattern, an antenna height, and an antenna location.

22. A method comprising:

adaptively adjusting at least one antenna parameter of one or more cells of a cellular radio communications network having a plurality of cells, to modify a cell boundary such that network capacity is increased.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

adaptively adjusting a pilot power of one or more cells to further modify a cell boundary.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the pilot power and the at least one antenna parameter are adjusted in accordance with a performance measurement.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the performance measurement is included in a measurement report received from a user terminal.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the performance measurement is a user terminal measurement selected from the group consisting of a pilot power, a ratio of pilot power to interference for the an active set, and a ratio of pilot power to interference for the neighboring set.

29. A method comprising:

determining a set of one or more adaptive parameters for a cellular radio communications network; and

using the set of adaptive parameters to determine a set of one or more static parameters for the cellular radio communications network.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the set of one or more adaptive network parameters includes parameters selected from the list consisting of a pilot power, an antenna elevation, an antenna azimuth, an antenna pattern, an antenna height, and an antenna location.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the set of one or more static parameters includes parameters selected from the list consisting of a base station location, a base station controller location, a mobile switching center location.

38. A cellular radio communications network comprising:

a mobile switching center;

at least one base station controller, coupled to the mobile switching center;

a plurality of base stations coupled to the at least one base station controller, each base station providing one or more cells, each cell serving one or more user terminals wherein at least one antenna parameter of one or more cells are adaptively adjusted, to modify a cell boundary such that network capacity is increased.

39. The cellular radio communications network of claim 38, wherein a pilot power of one or more cells are adaptively adjusted, to further modify a cell boundary such that network capacity is increased.

40. The cellular radio communications network of claim 38, wherein network capacity is increased due to a redistribution of a cell load.

58. A machine-readable medium having one or more executable instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a digital processing system caused the digital processing system to perform a method, the method comprising:

adaptively adjusting at least one antenna parameter of one or more cells of a cellular radio communications network having a plurality of cells, to modify a cell boundary such that network capacity is increased;

59. The machine-readable medium of claim 58, further comprising:

adaptively adjusting a pilot power of one or more cells to further a cell boundary.

62. The machine-readable medium of claim 59, wherein the pilot power and the at least one antenna parameter are adjusted in accordance with a performance measurement.

63. The machine-readable medium of claim 62, wherein the performance measurement is included in a measurement report received from a user terminal.

64. The machine-readable medium of claim 63, wherein the performance measurement is a user terminal measurement selected from the group consisting of a pilot power, a ratio of pilot power to interference for the an active set, and a ratio of-pilot power to interference for the neighboring set.
