Abstract

An implantable medical assist device includes a medical device. The medical device has a housing and electronics contained therein. A lead provides an electrical path to or from the electronics within the medical device. A resonance tuning module is located in the housing and is connected to the lead. The resonance tuning module includes a control circuit for determining a resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device and an adjustable impedance circuit to change the combined resonant frequency of the medical device and lead.

Claims

1. An implantable medical assist device, comprising:

a medical device including a housing and electronics contained therein;

a lead to provide an electrical path to or from said electronics within said medical device; and

a resonance tuning module located in said housing and operatively connected to said lead;

said resonance tuning module including,

a control circuit for determining a resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device, and

an adjustable impedance circuit.

2. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device.

3. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be substantially equal to a desired resonant frequency.

The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be substantially equal to a radio-frequency of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

5. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be substantially equal to 64 Mhz.

6. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be substantially equal to 128 MHz.

The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be slightly detuned from a radio-frequency of a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.

8. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be slightly detuned from 64 Mhz.

9. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said control circuit operatively controls an impedance of said adjustable impedance circuit to change the resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device to be slightly detuned from 128 MHz.

10. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said adjustable impedance circuit includes a variable inductor and a variable capacitor.

11. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said adjustable impedance circuit includes an adjustable inductive circuit and an adjustable capacitive circuit.

12. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said adjustable impedance circuit includes a variable inductor, a variable capacitor, and a variable resistor.

13. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said adjustable impedance circuit includes an adjustable inductive circuit, an adjustable capacitive circuit, and an adjustable resistive circuit.

14. An implantable medical assist device, comprising:

a medical device including a housing and electronics contained therein;

a first lead to provide an electrical path to or from said electronics within said medical device;

a resonance tuning module; and

a second lead to provide an electrical path to or from said resonance tuning module;

said resonance tuning module including,

a control circuit for determining a resonant frequency of the implantable medical assist device, and

an adjustable impedance circuit.

40. An implantable medical assist device, comprising:

a first medical device;

said first medical device including,

a housing,

electronics contained within said housing, and

a first medical device interface to provide an electrical path to or from said electronics within said housing;

a second medical device including a second medical device interface to provide an electrical path to or from said second medical device; and

a removable resonance module, operatively connected between said first medical device interface and said second medical device;

said removable resonance module providing an impedance such that a combined resonant frequency of said first medical device, said second medical device and said removable resonance module is substantially equal to a predetermined resonant frequency.

47. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 40, wherein said removable resonance module includes an inductor and a capacitor.

48. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 40, wherein said removable resonance module includes an inductive circuit and a capacitive circuit.

49. The implantable medical assist device as claimed in claim 40, wherein said removable resonance module includes an inductor, a capacitor, and a resistor.

52. An implantable medical assist device, comprising:

a first medical device; and

said first medical device including,

a housing,

electronics contained within said housing,

a first medical device interface to provide an electrical path to or from said electronics within said housing,

a first resonance circuit operatively connected between said electronics and said first medical device interface, and

a second resonance circuit operatively connected between said electronics and said first medical device interface;

a second medical device including a second medical device interface to provide an electrical path to or from said second medical device;

said first resonance module providing an impedance such that a combined resonant frequency of said first medical device, said second medical device and said removable resonance module is substantially equal to a first predetermined resonant frequency;

said second resonance module providing an impedance such that a combined resonant frequency of said first medical device,

said second medical device and said removable resonance module is substantially equal to a second predetermined resonant frequency.
