Abstract

Coating compositions are disclosed that include corrosion resisting particles such that the coating composition can exhibit corrosion resistance properties. Also disclosed are substrates at least partially coated with a coating deposited from such a composition and multi-component composite coatings, wherein at least one coating later is deposited from such a coating composition. Methods and apparatus for making ultrafine solid particles are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A primer and/or pretreatment coating composition comprising:

(a) a thermosetting film-forming resin formed from the reaction of a polyamine with an epoxy functional polymer; and

(b) corrosion resisting particles comprising magnesium oxide particles having an average primary particle size of no more than 100 nanometers.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the polyamine comprises a polyamide resin.

3. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 1, wherein the magnesium oxide particles have an average particle size of no more than 50 nanometers.

4. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 1, further comprising an adhesion promoting component.

5. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 4, wherein the adhesion promoting component comprises a free acid and/or a phosphatized epoxy resin.

6. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 1, further comprising a phenolic resin and/or an alkoxysilane.

7. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 6, wherein the alkoxysilane comprises an epoxy-functional silane.

8. An aluminum substrate at least partially coated with a primer coating comprising:

(a) a thermoset film-forming resin that is the reaction product of a polyamine and an epoxy functional polymer; and

(b) magnesium oxide particles having an average primary particle size of no more than 100 nanometers.

9. The substrate of claim 8, wherein the magnesium oxide particles have an average particle size of no more than 50 nanometers.

10. The substrate of claim 9, wherein the coating further comprises a phenolic resin and/or an alkoxysilane.

11. The substrate of claim 10, wherein the alkoxysilane comprises an epoxy-functional silane.

12. The aluminum substrate of claim 9, wherein the substrate is clad with pure aluminum or further comprises a chromate conversion coating.

13. A primer and/or pretreatment coating composition, comprising:

(a) a polyacrylate;

(b) a polythiol; and

(c) corrosion resisting particles comprising magnesium oxide particles having an average primary particle size of no more than 100 nanometers.

14. The composition of claim 13, wherein the polyacrylate comprises a urethane acrylate.

15. The composition of claim 13, wherein the magnesium oxide particles have an average particle size of no more than 50 nanometers.

16. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 13, further comprising an adhesion promoting component.

17. The primer and/or pretreatment coating composition of claim 16, wherein the adhesion promoting component comprises a free acid and/or a phosphatized epoxy resin.

18. An aluminum substrate at least partially coated with the composition of claim 13.

19. The substrate of claim 18, wherein the substrate is clad with pure aluminum or further comprises a chromate conversion coating.
