Abstract

An implantable stimulation system comprises an implantable stimulator and a control device. The control device is configured to transmit acoustic waves to the implantable stimulator, and the implantable stimulator is configured to transform the acoustic waves into electrical current, and generate stimulation energy based on the electrical current. For example, the electrical current can be transformed into electrical energy that can be used to generate the stimulation energy. Or the electrical current can contain signals used to directly or indirectly control the generation of the stimulation energy.

41. A method for stimulating heart tissue within a body, comprising:

transmitting an acoustic wave from a control device to at least one stimulator implanted within the body;

receiving the acoustic wave at an acoustic transducer of the stimulator and transforming the acoustic wave into electrical energy; and

providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue in response to the electrical energy.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising actuating a switch for selectively discharging stimulation energy from an energy storage device.

43. The method of claim 41, wherein the stimulator includes a controller configured to control the stimulation energy provided to the heart tissue.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the controller is configured to actuate a switch for selectively providing the stimulation energy to the heart tissue.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the controller transforms the electrical energy into stimulation energy and outputs the stimulation energy based on a communications signal received from the control device and/or another device in communication with the stimulator.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue includes the controller actuating a switch for selectively discharging energy from an energy storage device.

47. The method of claim 43, further comprising controlling the stimulation sequence and/or timing of the stimulation energy using the controller.

48. The method of claim 41, wherein transmitting an acoustic wave from the control device to at least one stimulator implanted within the body includes transmitting acoustic energizing waves based on one or more stimulation parameters stored in the control device.

49. The method of claim 41, wherein the control device selectively activates one or more stimulators based on a unique identification code associated with each stimulator.

50. The method of claim 41, wherein the transformed electrical energy is used for generating the stimulation energy.

51. The method of claim 41, further comprising charging an energy storage device of the stimulator based on the transformed electrical energy.

52. The method of claim 41, wherein the stimulator includes at least one sensor, and further comprising:

sensing one or more parameters within the body using the at least one sensor; and

transmitting sensor data from the sensor to the control device.

53. The method of claim 41, wherein providing electrical stimulation energy to the heart tissue includes providing stimulation energy to a lead coupled to the stimulator.

54. A method for stimulating heart tissue within a body, comprising:

transmitting an acoustic wave from a control device to at least one stimulator implanted within the body, the stimulator including a controller and an energy storage device;

receiving the acoustic wave at an acoustic transducer of the stimulator and transforming the acoustic wave into electrical current;

controlling the discharge of energy from the energy storage device based at least in part on a communications signal received by the stimulator; and

providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue based on the communications signal.

55. A method for stimulating heart tissue within a body, comprising:

providing a control device in acoustic communication with a stimulator implanted within the body, the control device and stimulator each including an acoustic transducer;

transmitting one or more broadband or scanning acoustic waves to the stimulator;

determining a frequency for communicating with the stimulator;

transmitting an acoustic energizing wave from the control device to the stimulator and activating the stimulator from an energizing mode of operation to an activation mode of operation;

transforming the acoustic energizing wave into electrical energy using the acoustic transducer of the stimulator; and

providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue in response to the electrical energy.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the control device transmits a command to the stimulator to actuate a switch coupled to an energy storage device.

57. The method of claim 55, wherein the stimulator includes a controller configured to control the stimulation energy provided to the heart tissue.

58. The method of claim 57, wherein providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue includes the controller actuating a switch for selectively discharging energy from an energy storage device.

59. The method of claim 55, wherein determining a frequency for communicating with the stimulator includes:

transmitting at least two acoustic waves from the control device each having a different frequency; and

measuring the time at which the stimulator transmits a data signal at each different frequency.

60. The method of claim 55, wherein providing stimulation energy to the heart tissue includes actuating a switch for selectively discharging energy from an energy storage device.
