Abstract

A system (and method) discloses migrating data of a first client device to a second client device. A second client device transmits configuration information of the second client device to a remote server. The remote server compares this data to data from the first client device that was previously sent to the remote server from the first client device. The remote server prepares data that is in a format that is compatible with hardware or software configuration of the second client device and that corresponds to the data from the first client device. Thereafter, the remote server transmits this data to the second client device, which uses it to initialize (e.g., restore or reinitialize) the second client device.

Claims

1. A method of migrating data of a first client device to a second client device, the method comprising:

from the second client device, sending configuration information of the second client device to a server;

at the second client device, receiving compatible data from the server, the compatible data chosen or converted from data sent from the first client device to the server for storage in accordance with the configuration information; and

initializing the second client device with the converted data.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the configuration information comprises device configuration information.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein sending the configuration information and receiving the compatible data are performed through a wireless communications network.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising sending the data of the second client device to the server for backup.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the compatible data includes converted data which is a sorted version of the data from the first client device, the converted data sorted in accordance with a criteria that is compatible with the second client device.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the criteria comprises senders, recipients, or context of the data.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the data from the first client device comprises a first set of data and a second set of data associated with the first set of data, and the converted data comprising a third set of data corresponding to the first set of data in the second client device and a fourth set of data corresponding to the second set of data in the second client device, the server disassociating the first set of data from the second set of data to generate the third set of data and the fourth set of data.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising tracking a state of an account for the first client device in the server, and receiving the compatible data at the second client device only when the account for the first client device in the server is in an active state.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the compatible data comprises executable codes.

10. A system for facilitating migration of data from a first client device to a second client device, the system comprising a server communicating with the first and the second client devices, the server comprising:

a communication module for communicating with the first client device and the second client device;

a data store associated with the communication module for storing the data received from the first client device; and

a migration module associated with the data store, the migration module generating compatible data that is compatible with the second client device from the data received from the first client.

11. The system of claim 10, further comprising a device database storing capability and configuration information of the first and second client devices, the migration module generating the compatibility data by referencing the device database.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the configuration information comprises the device configuration information.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the compatible data comprises converted data which is a sorted version of the data from the first client device, the converted data sorted in accordance with a criteria that is compatible with the second client device.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the data received from the first client device comprises a first set of data and a second set of data that is associated with the first set of data, and the compatible data comprises a third set of data corresponding to the first set of data and a fourth set of data corresponding to the second set of data, the third set of data disassociated from the fourth set of data.

15. The system of claim 10, further comprising an account state management server tracking a state of an account for the first client device, the migration module operable to send the compatible data to the second client device only when the account for the first client service is in an active state.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the compatible data comprises executable codes.

17. A mobile computing device, comprising:

an application program interface wirelessly communicating with a server that stores backup data from a previous mobile device, the server generating compatible data from the backup data of the previous mobile device, the compatible data in a format that is compatible with at least one of a hardware or software configuration of the mobile computing device; and

a module for receiving and storing the compatible data from the server via the application program interface, the module sending configuration information of the mobile computing device to the server via the application interface.

18. The mobile computing device of claim 17, wherein the server determines the format of the compatible data based on the configuration information.

19. The mobile computing device of claim 17, wherein the mobile computing device is any one of a mobile computer, a personal digital assistant, a portable e-mail device, and a laptop computer.

20. The mobile computing device of claim 17, wherein the server manages an account associated with the mobile computing device, and the communication between the application program interface of the mobile computing device and the server is enabled only when the account associated with the mobile computing device is in an active state.

21. The mobile computing device of claim 17, wherein the module further communicates with the server via the application program interface to send and receive backup data of the mobile computing device.

22. The mobile computing device of claim 21, wherein the module communicates in predetermined time intervals with the server via the application program interface to send the backup data to the remote server.
