Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention provide a mechanism for automatically creating a playlist for a user. In particular, data indicating music played by other users in the user'"'"'s social network is collected. Music is then selected from this data and gathered from a music service in which the user subscribes, such as iTunes, Yahoo Music, etc. The service then builds the playlist with the gathered music.

Claims

1. A method of generating a playlist, said method comprising:

determining a social network of a user;

identifying music played by members in the social network;

selecting at least some of the identified music;

retrieving the selected music; and

creating a playlist based on the retrieved music and without further action by the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting at least some of the identified music comprises selecting music from other users in the user'"'"'s social network that have been actively identified by the user.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting at least some of the identified music comprises selecting music from other users in the user'"'"'s social network based on passively monitoring sharing activity of the user in the social network.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting at least some of the identified music comprises selecting music from other users who have previously provided music selected by that user.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting at least some of the identified music comprises invitations to a plurality of users of the social network service to select music being played by the other users.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein retrieving the selected music comprises:

determining sources of music on the playlist for that are authorized for the user; and

retrieving the music on the playlist from the sources.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein retrieving the selected music from a download service of the user comprises retrieving music on the playlist from a plurality of sources based on accounts possessed by the user.

8. An apparatus comprising means configured to perform the method of claim 1.

9. A computer readable medium comprising executable program code that configures a computer to perform the method of claim 1.
