Abstract

Methods and computer-readable media are provided for rendering a document view with supplemental information. A view of a document is rendered such that the document fills a canvas. The client receives a request to view a supplemental information area associated with the document. In response to the request to view the supplemental information area, a view of the document is rendered at the client such that the document does not fill the canvas. The supplemental information area is then rendered in a portion of the canvas that is not occupied by the document.

Claims

1. A method for rendering a view of a document with supplemental information, the method comprising:

rendering a view of the document such that the document fills a canvas;

receiving a request to view a supplemental information area associated with the document;

in response to receiving the request, rendering a view of the document such that the document does not fill the canvas; and

rendering the supplemental information area in a portion of the canvas not occupied by the document.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the supplemental information area in a portion of the canvas not occupied by the document comprises rendering a user annotation in the portion of the canvas not occupied by the document.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the user annotation comprises information associated with the document that is created by a user and accessible to the user.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the supplemental information area in a portion of the canvas not occupied by the document comprises rendering a community annotation in the portion of the canvas not occupied by the document.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the community annotation comprises information associated with the document that is created by a user and accessible to one or more other users.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the supplemental information area in a portion of the canvas not occupied by the document comprises rendering an advertisement in the portion of the canvas not occupied by the document.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein rendering the view of the document such that the document does not fill the canvas comprises fluidly reducing a size of the document from the size of the canvas to a size smaller than the canvas.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving supplemental information associated with the document; and

rendering the supplemental information in the supplemental information area.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request to conceal the view of the supplemental information area associated with the document; and

in response to receiving the request, rendering the view of the document such that the document fills the canvas.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein rendering the view of the document such that the document fills the canvas comprises fluidly increasing a size of the document from a size smaller than the canvas to the size of the canvas.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the document comprises a World Wide Web page.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the document comprises a word processing document.

13. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

render a view of a document such that the document fills a canvas;

receive a request to zoom out of the view of the document;

in response to receiving the request, to render a view of the document such that the document does not fill the canvas such that a portion of the canvas remains unoccupied by the document;

retrieve supplemental information; and

to render the supplemental information in the portion of the canvas that remains unoccupied by the document.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the supplemental information comprises annotations associated with the document and created by a user of the computer.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the supplemental information comprises annotations stored on a computer network.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the supplemental information comprises an advertisement.

17. A method for rendering a view of a document with supplemental information, the method comprising:

rendering a view of the document where the document does not occupy an entire viewable portion of a window;

determining whether supplemental information corresponding to the document is stored in a computer storage device;

if the supplemental information corresponding to the document is stored in the computer storage device, then retrieving the supplemental information; and

rendering a view of the document where the supplemental information is displayed in the viewable portion of the window not occupied by the document.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the document comprises a World Wide Web page.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

receiving a selection of an area within the viewable portion of the window not occupied by the document;

receiving supplemental information; and

rendering the supplemental information within the selected area of the viewable portion of the window not occupied by the document.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the supplemental information comprises a community annotation accessible to a plurality of users.
