Abstract

A unified messaging interface and associated methods that enables mobile communication device users to initiate the creation of a message for a recipient without being required to explicitly specify the type of message that is to be created. The mobile communication device supports multiple message types, such as voice, text, and picture messages. The user begins providing message content to the communication device by, for example, speaking, entering text, or clicking a shutter of a camera. The unified messaging interface detects the nature of the content and creates a corresponding type of message. The user can indicate a desire to create and send a message by performing “one-click” action. The one-click action is an operation performed on the device that can be instantiated as a single button-press on the keypad; selection of a single soft key by depressing a button on the keypad or touching the screen of the device; or issuance of a single voice command.

Claims

1. A wireless communication system comprising:

a wireless communication device configured to present a messaging user interface;

the wireless configuration device being configured to, in response to receiving message content while presenting the messaging user interface, create a first type of message that includes the received message content if the received message content is of a first message content type;

the wireless configuration device being configured to, in response to receiving message content while presenting the messaging user interface, create a second type of message that includes the received message content if the received message content is of a second message content type.

2. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a text message;

wherein the first message content type is text content;

wherein the second type of message is a picture message; and

wherein the second message content type is picture content.

3. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first message content type is text content;

and wherein the second message content type is picture content.

4. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a text message;

and wherein the second type of message is a picture message.

5. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a text message;

wherein the first message content type is text content;

wherein the second type of message is an audio message; and

wherein the second message content type is audio content.

6. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first message content type is text content;

and wherein the second message content type is audio content.

7. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a text message;

and wherein the second type of message is an audio message.

8. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a picture message;

wherein the first message content type is picture content;

wherein the second type of message is an audio message; and

wherein the second message content type is audio content.

9. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first message content type is picture content;

and wherein the second message content type is audio content.

10. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a picture message;

and wherein the second type of message is an audio message.

11. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a text message.

12. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first message content type is text content.

13. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the first type of message is a picture message.

17. The wireless communication system as in claim 1, wherein the wireless communication device includes a keypad including a key;

and wherein the wireless communication device is configured to present the messaging user interface in response to the key being pressed.

18. A wireless communication system comprising:

a wireless communication device configured to present a messaging user interface and to, when the messaging user interface is presented, automatically commence receiving audio content;

the wireless configuration device being configured to, in response to receiving other-than-audio content while the audio content is being received, discard the audio content and create an other-than-audio message that includes the other-than-audio content;

the wireless configuration device being configured to, in response to receiving user input while the audio content is being received, create an audio message that includes the received audio content if the user input indicates that an audio message should be sent.

19. The wireless communication system as in claim 18, wherein the other-than-audio message is a text message.

20. The wireless communication system as in claim 18, wherein the other-than-audio content is text content.

21. The wireless communication system as in claim 18, wherein the other-than-audio message is a picture message.

22. The wireless communication system as in claim 18, wherein the other-than-audio content is picture content.

23. The wireless communication system as in claim 18, wherein the wireless communication device includes a keypad including a key;

and wherein the wireless communication device is configured to present the messaging user interface in response to the key being pressed.

24. A wireless communication system comprising:

a wireless communication device configured to, after receiving message content, automatically identify a type of message from a plurality of alternative message types based on a message content type of the received message content, automatically create a message of the identified message type, and automatically add the received message content to the created message.

25. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the identified message type is a text message.

26. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the message content type of the received message content is text content.

27. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the identified message type is a picture message.

28. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the message content type of the received message content is picture content.

29. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the identified message type is an audio message.

30. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the message content type of the received message content is audio content.

31. The wireless communication system as in claim 24, wherein the wireless communication device includes a keypad including a key;

and wherein the wireless communication device is configured to commence the receiving of the message content in response to the key being pressed.
