Abstract

A computer-implemented method can include displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane, displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames, enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item, and upon detecting that the user has selected a frame, creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame and one or more adjacent frames.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane;

displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames;

enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item; and

upon detecting that the user has selected a frame, creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame and one or more adjacent frames.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising enabling a user to transfer the created group of frames to the project pane.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more adjacent frames are on either or both sides of the selected frame.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein a quantity of adjacent frames included in the created group corresponds to a clip duration suitable for human viewing.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein enabling the user to select further comprises enabling the user to perform operations comprising:

placing a cursor on a frame on the thumbnail group; and

clicking on the frame using a device controlling the cursor.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising highlighting the created group of frames.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the highlighting comprises placing a pair of identifiers at the first frame and the last frame of the group of frames.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising enabling the user to change the position of one or both identifiers.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the created group of frames corresponds to a duration of time.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the duration of time is altered based on user input.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein enabling the user to transfer the created group of frames comprises enabling the user to perform operations comprising:

placing a cursor on a frame in the group of frames; and

clicking on the frame on which the cursor is placed using a pointing device controlling the cursor, wherein the clicking on the frame causes the created group of frames to be transferred from the media pane and displayed in the project pane.

12. A medium bearing instructions to enable one or more machines to perform operations comprising:

displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane;

displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames;

enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item; and

upon detecting that the user has selected a frame, creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame and one or more adjacent frames.

13. The medium of claim 12 further comprising enabling a user to transfer the created group of frames to the project pane.

14. The medium of claim 12 wherein the one or more adjacent frames are on either or both sides of the selected frame.

15. The medium of claim 12 wherein a quantity of adjacent frames included in the created group corresponds to a clip duration suitable for human viewing.

16. The medium of claim 12 wherein enabling the user to select further comprises enabling the user to perform operations comprising:

placing a cursor on a frame on the thumbnail group; and

clicking on the frame using a device controlling the cursor.

17. The medium of claim 12 further comprising highlighting the created group of frames.

18. The medium of claim 17 wherein the highlighting comprises placing a pair of identifiers at the first frame and the last frame of the group of frames.

19. The medium of claim 18 further comprising enabling the user to change the position of one or both identifiers.

20. The medium of claim 12 wherein the created group of frames corresponds to a duration of time.

21. The medium of claim 20 wherein the duration of time is altered based on user input.

22. The medium of claim 12 wherein enabling the user to transfer the created group of frames comprises enabling the user to perform operations comprising:

placing a cursor on a frame in the group of frames; and

clicking on the frame on which the cursor is placed using a pointing device controlling the cursor, wherein the clicking on the frame causes the created group of frames to be transferred from the media pane and displayed in the project pane.

24. The method of claim 12, wherein the created group of frames corresponds to a duration of time.

25. The method of claim 13, wherein the duration of time is altered based on user input.

26. The method of claim 12, wherein the selected frame is the first frame in the created group of frames.

27. The method of claim 12, wherein the selected frame is at any position in the created group of frames.

28. The method of claim 16, wherein the selected frame is at a center of the created group of frames and wherein a number of frames to the left of the selected frame equals a number of frames to the right of the selected frame.

23. A computer-implemented method comprising:

displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane;

displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames;

enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item; and

upon detecting that the user has selected a frame

creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame, and

transferring the created group of frames to the project pane.

29. A medium bearing instructions to enable one or more machines to perform operations comprising:

displaying, within a user interface in a digital media system, a media pane, and a project pane;

displaying, within the media pane, a thumbnail group representing a media item, the thumbnail group comprising one or more thumbnails, a thumbnail comprising a plurality of frames;

enabling a user to select, from the thumbnail group, a frame of the media item; and

upon detecting that the user has selected a frame

creating a group of frames, the group of frames including the selected frame, and

transferring the created group of frames to the project pane.

30. The medium of claim 29, wherein the created group of frames corresponds to a duration of time.

31. The medium of claim 30, wherein the duration of time is altered based on user input.

32. The medium of claim 29, wherein the selected frame is the first frame in the created group of frames.

33. The medium of claim 29, wherein the selected frame is at any position in the created group of frames.

34. The medium of claim 33, wherein the selected frame is at a center of the created group of frames and wherein a number of frames to the left of the selected frame equals a number of frames to the right of the selected frame.
