Abstract

A method for information management comprises intercepting an output from an application; distributing packets according to a routing scheme, wherein the packets are associated with the output, and wherein distributing the packets may occur when the application is associated with a first operating system, and may also occur when the application is associated with a second operating system; and storing the packets.

Claims

1. A method for information management comprising:

intercepting an output from an application;

distributing packets according to a routing scheme, wherein the packets are associated with the output, and wherein distributing the packets may occur when the application is associated with a first operating system, and may also occur when the application is associated with a second operating system; and

storing the packets.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising transforming the packets from a first form to a second form.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the second form is independent of how the output is intercepted and also independent of how the packets are distributed.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising substantially continuously monitoring outputs from the application.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the routing scheme is a network routing scheme.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the routing scheme is a SAN routing scheme.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein distributing packets occurs on a machine hosting the application.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein distributing packets occurs remotely from a machine hosting the application.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein intercepting the output occurs on a machine hosting the application.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein intercepting the output occurs remotely from a machine hosting the application, and wherein the intercepting occurs before an operating system writes to a storage.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the output is associated with a file.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the output is associated with a data block.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the output is associated with a protocol packet.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating meta-information associated with the output.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the meta-information is associated with a creation of a file.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the meta-information is associated with a deletion of a file.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the meta-information is associated with a backup opportunity.

18. A system for information management comprising:

a processor configured to;

intercept an output from an application;

distribute packets according to a routing scheme, wherein the packets are associated with the output, and wherein distributing the packets may occur when the application is associated with a first operating system, and may also occur when the application is associated with a second operating system; and

a memory configured to store the packets.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the memory is remote from the processor.

20. A computer program product for information management, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:

intercepting an output from an application;

distributing packets according to a routing scheme, wherein the packets are associated with the output, and wherein distributing the packets may occur when the application is associated with a first operating system, and may also occur when the application is associated with a second operating system; and

storing the packets.
