Abstract

The present invention provides a method for supplying unicast and multicast transmissions to a plurality of mobile devices in a wireless system. The method comprises supplying a multicast signal using a first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices. Thereafter, a unicast signal is supplied using a second portion of total available power, wherein the second portion of total available power is a function of the first portion of total available power.

Claims

1. A method for supplying unicast and multicast transmissions to a plurality of mobile devices in a wireless system, comprising:

supplying a multicast signal using a first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices; and

supplying a unicast signal using a second portion of total available power, wherein the second portion of total available power is a function of the first portion of total available power.

A method, as set forth in claim 1, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a long term channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 2, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of the worst long term channel quality indicator associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 1, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 4, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of the worst signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 1, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a bit error rate associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 6, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of the worst bit error rate associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 1, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of a block error rate associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 8, wherein supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power further comprises supplying the multicast signal using the first portion of total available power, wherein the first portion of total available power is a function of the worst block error rate associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 1, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of a long term channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 11, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the long term channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the worst long term channel quality indicator associated with the mobile devices.

10. A method for supplying unicast and multicast transmissions to a plurality of mobile devices in a wireless system, comprising:

periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of a channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 10, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of a signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 13, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the worst signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 10, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of a bit error rate associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 15, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the bit error rate associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the worst bit error rate associated with the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 10, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the channel quality indicator associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of a block error rate signal associated with at least one of the mobile devices.

A method, as set forth in claim 17, wherein periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the block error rate associated with at least one of the mobile devices further comprises periodically allocating power between the unicast and multicast transmissions as a function of the worst block error rate signal associated with the mobile devices.
