Abstract

Systems and methods for processing sensor analyte data, including initiating calibration, updating calibration, evaluating clinical acceptability of reference and sensor analyte data, and evaluating the quality of sensor calibration. During initial calibration, the analyte sensor data is evaluated over a period of time to determine stability of the sensor. The sensor may be calibrated using a calibration set of one or more matched sensor and reference analyte data pairs. The calibration may be updated after evaluating the calibration set for best calibration based on inclusion criteria with newly received reference analyte data. Fail-safe mechanisms are provided based on clinical acceptability of reference and analyte data and quality of sensor calibration. Algorithms provide for optimized prospective and retrospective analysis of estimated blood analyte data from an analyte sensor.

Claims

1. A method for determining a time period for obtaining reference glucose values, the method comprising:

receiving sensor data from continuous glucose sensor, the sensor data comprising one or more sensor data points;

determining a time period to obtain reference data from a reference glucose monitor; and

requesting reference data during the time period.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining a time period comprises at least one of evaluating a glucose value, evaluating a rate of change of glucose values, evaluating an acceleration of glucose values, and evaluating a deceleration of glucose values.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of determining a time period comprises at least one of evaluating whether a rate of change is below a predetermined threshold.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining a time period is based at least in part on at least one of meal information and exercise information.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising a step of calibrating the sensor data based at least in part on the reference data.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of requesting reference data comprises prompting a user to provide the reference data, wherein the prompting step comprises prompting on a user interface.

7. A system for determining a time period for obtaining reference glucose values, the system comprising:

a sensor data module configured to receive sensor data from a continuous glucose sensor, the sensor data comprising one or more sensor data points;

a processor module configured to determine a time period to obtain reference data from a reference glucose monitor; and

an output module configured to request reference data during the time period.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the processor module is configured to determine a time period by evaluating at least one of a glucose value, a rate of change of glucose values, an acceleration of glucose values, and a deceleration of glucose values.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the processor module is configured to determine a time period by evaluating whether a rate of change of glucose values is below a predetermined threshold.

10. The system of claim 7, wherein the processor module is configured to determine a time period based at least in part on at least one of meal information and exercise information.

11. The system of claim 7, further comprising a calibration module configured to calibrate the sensor data based at least in part on the reference data.
