Abstract

Methods, systems and computer program products to implement extensions of the Media Transport Protocol (MTP) are provided herein. The methods include opening a session between an initiator and a responder, exchanging one or more of device and system information and sending one of an operation or event based on control and status information. The operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter. The methods also include sending or receiving one of an operation or event based on remote URL information. The operation includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter. These extensions may be in the form of one or more of an operation, an event, a dataset or property code.

Claims

1. A method to exchange control and status information between an initiator and a responder operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:

opening a session between an initiator and a responder;

exchanging one or more of device and system information; and

sending or receiving one of an operation or event based on control and status information;

wherein said operation and/or event includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the protocol is one of a Media Transport Protocol (MTP) or a Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the sending step further comprises sending a control and status event from the responder to the initiator.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein in response to the event, the initiator sends a first operation to the responder requesting a dataset having control and status information.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein in response to the operation from the initiator, the responder sends a second operation to the initiator including a dataset having control and status information.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the initiator determines whether the dataset includes a text string.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the initiator determines whether the dataset includes an image, if the dataset does not contain a text string, and displays the image if it is present.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the initiator determines whether the dataset includes a video, if the dataset does not include an image, and displays the video if it is present.

9. The method of claim 4, wherein the dataset includes one or more of a timestamp, a text string, an image, an image type, a video file, a video file type, an audio file, an audio file type, a sample data form flag and sample data.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the sending step further comprises sending an operation from the initiator to the responder including a dataset having control and status information.

11. A method to exchange remote Uniform Resource Locator (URL) information between an initiator and a responder operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:

opening a session between an initiator and a responder;

exchanging one or more of device and system information; and

sending or receiving one of an operation or event based on remote URL information;

wherein said operation and/or event includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the receiving step further includes receiving an event from a responder requesting a remote URL launch.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein in response to receiving the event, the initiator sends a first operation to the responder requesting a dataset having a remote URL.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein in response to receiving the first operation, the responder sends a second operation to the initiator that includes a dataset having remote URL information.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein in response to the receiving the second operation, the initiator extracts the remote URL information from the dataset and launches a default browser at the remote URL.

16. A system to exchange control and status information with an initiator operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:

a processor;

a memory in communication with the processor, the memory for storing a plurality of processing instructions for directing the processor to;

open a session with an initiator;

exchange one or more of device and system information; and

sending or receiving one of an operation or event based on control and status information;

wherein said operation and/or event includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the system is one of a computational device, a portable media player device, a mobile communications, a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) device, a communications device or a medical device.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the protocol is one of a Media Transport Protocol (MTP) or a Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the memory further comprises instructions for directing the processor to send a control and status event to the initiator.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the memory further comprises instructions for directing the processor to send a second operation to the initiator including a dataset having control and status information in response to receiving a first a first operation from the initiator requesting a dataset having control and status information.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the dataset includes one or more of a timestamp, a text string, an image, an image type, a video file, a video file type, an audio file, an audio file type, a sample data form flag and sample data.

22. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium including control logic stored therein to exchange control and status information with an initiator operating under a data transfer protocol, comprising:

first control logic means for causing a computer to open a session with an initiator;

second control logic means for causing a computer to exchange one or more of device and system information with the initiator; and

third control logic means for causing a computer to send or receive one of an operation or event based on control and status information;

wherein said operation and/or event includes one or more of a dataset, response code, operation parameter and response parameter.

23. The computer program product of claim 22, wherein the third control logic means further comprises control logic means for sending a control and status event to the initiator.

24. The computer program product of claim 23, wherein the third control logic means further comprises control logic means to send a second operation to the initiator including a control and information dataset in response to receiving a first operation from the initiator requesting a control and status information dataset.
