Abstract

In embodiments, the present invention provides a method and system for managing playback of content delivered to a mobile device with a pause and resume functionality. The method and system including receiving delivered content on a mobile device, initiating playback of the delivered content, pausing playback of the content being delivered to the mobile device in response to an action and resuming delivery of the content upon a request.

Claims

1. A method for managing playback of content delivered to a device with a pause and resume functionality, the method comprising:

receiving delivered content on the device;

initiating playback of the delivered content;

pausing playback of the content being delivered to the device in response to an action; and

resuming delivery of the content upon a request.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the action is a network related pause.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the network related pause is due to at least one of network bandwidth limitations, duration of a session, signal quality.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the action is automatically detecting an incoming phone call.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the action is algorithm based.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the algorithm is based on at least one aspect of the session, the user, the provider, the advertiser, the carrier, the content, a user profile, a carrier preference, a content provider preference, and an advertisement placement demand associated with the creative content.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the algorithm determines a duration of play time between advertisements.

35. The method of claim 1 wherein resuming delivery is server assisted.

36. The method of claim 1 wherein resuming delivery is device independent.

41. The method of claim 1 wherein resuming delivery is from the point at which delivery paused.

42. The method of claim 1 wherein resuming delivery is from a different point than the point at which delivery paused.

81. The method of claim 1 wherein the content is delivered at least in part as RTP data packets.

82. The method of claim 1 wherein the content is delivered at least in part as HTTP data packets.

83. The method of claim 1 wherein the content is delivered at least in part as data packets that are suitable for network data transmission.

84. The method of claim 1 wherein the content is delivered at least in part as data packets that are suitable for video content transmission.

85. The method of claim 1 further comprising using a proxy to track the delivery of content.

86. The method of claim 1 wherein upon resuming delivery of the content, the content is delivered to another device.

87. The method of claim 1 wherein upon resuming delivery of the content, the content is delivered to another destination.

88. The method of claim 1 wherein upon resuming delivery of the content, the content is delivered to the device at a bandwidth different than the bandwidth at which the content was delivered prior to pausing.

89. The method of claim 1 wherein upon resuming delivery of the content, the content is delivered to the device using a different format for delivery than the format used prior to pausing.

90. The method of claim 1 further comprising changing the delivery destination from the device to at least one other device, wherein content delivery resumes from the paused position after changing the destination.

91. The method of claim 90 wherein the at least one other device has at least one attribute different from the device.

92. The method of claim 91 wherein the at least one attribute is the bandwidth at which the device is operating.

93. The method of claim 1 wherein delivery is resumed through the use of an interactive programming guide.

94. The method of claim 1 wherein the point at which delivery is resumed is determined by an algorithm.

95. The method of claim 94 wherein the algorithm determines the percentage of the content that is viewed based on the data transferred, total file size, total running time and a buffering constant.

96. The method of claim 94 wherein the algorithm determines the percentage of the content that is viewed as the data transferred divided by the total file size, all multiplied by the total running time, minus a buffering constant.

48. A method for remotely controlling a streaming media server with a pause and resume functionality, the method comprising:

transmitting content as a plurality of data packets to a destination;

recording a number of bytes transferred per session;

receiving a pause instruction;

calculating the total number of bytes transferred to the destination before receiving the pause instruction; and

calculating the position at which the content was paused.

49. The method of claim 48 wherein the destination is a mobile device.

52. The method of claim 48, wherein a client RTSP request handler tracks the number of bytes transferred per session.

55. The method of claim 48 further comprising, a session monitor for maintaining an in-memory map of the active client connections the RTSP handler is handling.

56. The method of claim 55 wherein the session monitor is associated with at least one of a consumption profile, user profile, and device profile.

97. The method of claim 48 wherein the pause instruction is received from the destination.

98. The method of claim 48 wherein at least a subset of the data packets are RTP data packets.

99. The method of claim 48 wherein at least a subset of the data packets are HTTP data packets.

104. The method of claim 48 further comprising resuming transmission of the content to the destination.

105. The method of claim 104 wherein transmission is resumed through the use of an interactive programming guide.

106. The method of claim 48 further comprising resuming transmission to the same destination using a different format based on the available network bandwidth.

107. The method of claim 48 further comprising resuming transmission of the content to a different destination.

108. The method of claim 48 wherein the content is video content.

109. The method of claim 48 further comprising changing the delivery format upon resuming transmission.

110. The method of claim 49 wherein upon resuming transmission of the content, the content is transmitted to another device.

111. The method of claim 110 wherein at least one attribute of the other device differs from at least one attribute of the mobile device.

112. The method of claim 110 wherein the other device is operating at a bandwidth different from the bandwidth at which the mobile device is operating.

113. The method of claim 48, wherein the position at which the content was paused is calculated based on an algorithm.

114. The method of claim 113, wherein the algorithm determines the percentage of the content that is viewed based on the data transferred, total file size, total running time and a buffering constant.

115. The method of claim 113, wherein the algorithm determines the percentage of the content that is viewed as the data transferred divided by the total file size, all multiplied by the total running time, minus a buffering constant.

58. A method for managing playback of web content delivered to a mobile device with a pause and resume functionality, the method comprising:

receiving delivered content on the mobile device;

initiating playback of the delivered content;

receiving delivered content on the mobile device;

initiating playback of the delivered content;
