Abstract

A vascular access device may include a septum and a gas permeable vent in communication with at least a portion of the septum. The vent may be capable of venting gas from an extravascular system to which the vascular access device is capable of attaching. A method of venting a medical device may include providing a vascular access device having a septum and forming part of an extravascular system, providing a gas permeable vent in communication with at least a portion of the septum, and venting gas from the extravascular system through the gas permeable vent of the device.

Claims

1. A medical device, comprising:

a vascular access device, wherein the vascular access device includes a septum; and

a gas permeable vent in communication with at least a portion of the septum, wherein the vent is capable of venting a gas from an extravascular system.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes an adapter and a vent plug secured to the adapter.

3. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a cannula.

4. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes high-density polyethylene fibers.

5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a vent plug that is closed upon septum actuation.

6. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a porous material.

7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a micro tube array.

8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a laminated film vent.

9. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a venting plug.

10. The medical device of claim 9, wherein the septum includes a top disc and the venting plug at least in part encapsulates the top disc.

11. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the septum includes a bi-stable spring.

12. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a cannula and the vascular access device further includes a chamber in communication with the septum, wherein the chamber is filled with gel.

13. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a needle capable of penetrating the septum.

14. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a hydrophobic thread.

15. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a flexible plastic catheter tubing.

16. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a round cannula.

17. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes a flattened cannula.

18. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the vent includes rigid tubing and a stylet.

19. A method of venting a medical device, comprising:

providing a vascular access device, wherein the vascular access device includes a septum and forms part of an extravascular system;

providing a gas permeable vent in communication with at least a portion of the septum; and

venting gas from the extravascular system through the gas permeable vent of the vascular access device.

20. A medical device, comprising:

means for providing access to the vascular system of a patient, wherein the means for providing access includes a septum and forms part of an extravascular system; and

means for venting the extravascular system, wherein the means for venting communicates with the septum.
