Abstract

A multimodal electronic device (100) includes a shutter enabled dynamic keypad for presenting one of a plurality of keypad configurations to a user. Each keypad configuration, which is presented by an optical shutter (204) that opens or closes windows or shutters that are geometrically configured as alphanumeric or device keys or symbols. Each keypad configuration, in one embodiment, is limited to those needed for the particular mode of operation of the device (100). The optical shutter (204) is a low-resolution display that presents user actuation targets to a user in a low-resolution key area. As each mode of the device changes, the corresponding keypad configuration presented changes accordingly.

Claims

1. An electronic device having a user interface comprising a capacitive touch sensor and a force sensor coupled to an optical shutter enabled dynamic keypad.

2. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein the optical shutter enabled dynamic keypad comprises a first display area comprising selectively operable segments configured to transition between an opaque state and a translucent state.

3. The electronic device of claim 2, wherein the first display area comprises a segmented display device.

4. The electronic device of claim 2, wherein each of the selectively operable segments is geometrically configured as one of an alphanumeric key, a predetermined symbol key, or combinations thereof.

5. The electronic device of claim 2, further comprising a transflector layer disposed beneath the first display area.

6. The electronic device of claim 5, further comprising an electroluminescent device.

7. The electronic device of claim 6, wherein the electroluminescent device comprises a plurality of selectively lightable segments configured to align with the selectively operable segments.

8. The electronic device of claim 2, further comprising a second display area disposed proximately with the optical shutter enabled dynamic keypad.

9. The electronic device of claim 8, wherein first display area comprises a segmented display device, further wherein the second display area comprises a pixilated display device.

10. The electronic device of claim 9, wherein the segmented display device at least partially covers the pixelated display device.

11. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the pixelated display device comprises a liquid crystal device having a first light polarizer and a second, controllable light polarizer configured to selectively alter light passing therethrough.

12. The electronic device of claim 11, further comprising a polarizing layer disposed above the liquid crystal device, wherein a transmission axis of the polarizing layer is substantially parallel to a transmission axis of the first light polarizer.

13. A electronic device, comprising a user interface for receiving a touch input, the user interface comprising a cover layer, a capacitive sensor layer disposed beneath the cover layer, and a segmented optical shutter layer configured to present multiple interface configurations disposed beneath the cover layer.

14. The electronic device of claim 13, further comprising a resistance sensing layer, configured to detect contact with the user interface, disposed beneath the cover layer.

15. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the resistance sensing layer is disposed beneath the segmented optical shutter layer and the segmented optical shutter layer is disposed beneath the capacitive sensor layer.

16. The electronic device of claim 14, further comprising an electroluminescent device disposed beneath the segmented optical shutter layer.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the electroluminescent device comprises a segmented electroluminescent cell layer.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, further comprising a circuit substrate assembly electrically coupled to at least one of the capacitive sensor layer, the segmented optical shutter layer, or the resistance sensing layer.

19. The electronic device of claim 18, wherein the circuit substrate assembly comprises control circuitry electrically coupled to the segmented electroluminescent cell layer, wherein the control circuitry is configured to selectively actuate at least one segment of the segmented electroluminescent cell layer, thereby causing the at least one segment to transform from a first state to a second state.

20. The electronic device of claim 19, wherein the first state comprises an opaque state and the second state comprises a translucent state.

21. The electronic device of claim 17, further comprising a circuit substrate assembly electrically coupled to the segmented electroluminescent cell layer, wherein control circuitry coupled to the circuit substrate assembly is configured to selectively actuate at least one cell to transform from a first cell state to a second cell state.

22. The electronic device of claim 21, wherein the second cell state comprises an illuminated state.

23. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the cover layer is manufactured from one of thin film plastic or glass.

24. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the cover layer has non-conductive ink printing selectively disposed thereon.

25. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the cover layer comprises a display region and a user interface region.

26. The electronic device of claim 25, wherein the capacitive sensor layer comprises a plurality of capacitive sensing devices disposed about the display region.

27. The electronic device of claim 26, further comprising a resistance sensing layer disposed beneath the cover layer, wherein the resistance sensing layer is disposed below the user interface region.

28. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the cover layer, the capacitive sensor layer, and the segmented optical shutter layer are mechanically coupled together with non-conductive, translucent adhesive.

29. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the segmented optical shutter layer comprises a low-resolution liquid crystal display.

30. The electronic device of claim 29, wherein the low-resolution liquid crystal display comprises a twisted nematic liquid crystal display.

31. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the segmented optical shutter layer comprises a plurality of segments, each of the plurality of segments corresponding to a key for the electronic device, such that when the each of the plurality of segments is actuated, the key becomes visible to a user.

32. The electronic device of claim 31, wherein the each of the plurality of segments is geometrically configured as a particular key symbol for the electronic device.

The electronic device of claim 31, further comprising an electroluminescent cell layer comprising a plurality of electroluminescent cells aligned with the plurality of segments, wherein when the each of the plurality of segments is actuated, a corresponding electroluminescent cell is actuated so as to project light through the each of the plurality of segments.

34. The electronic device of claim 14, further comprising a tactile feedback layer disposed beneath the resistance sensing layer.

35. The electronic device of claim 34, wherein the tactile feedback layer comprises a metal plate having at least one piezo transducer coupled thereto, further comprising a control circuit coupled to each of the resistance sensing layer and the at least one peizo transducer, such that upon the control circuit receiving a key signal from the resistance sensing layer, the control circuit is configured to actuate the at least one piezo transducer.

36. An electronic device having a user interface comprising a dynamic keypad region, the dynamic keypad region comprising:

a segmented optical shutter configured to present a plurality of keypad configurations by transitioning segments of the segmented optical shutter from opaque states to translucent states, each keypad configuration comprising a plurality of actuation targets;

a capacitive sensor configured to detect proximate position of an object relative to one of the dynamic keypad region or any of the plurality of actuation targets; and

a force switch array configured to detect contact with any of one of the dynamic keypad region or any of the plurality of actuation targets.

37. The electronic device of claim 36, wherein the plurality of keypad configurations correspond to a plurality of modes of operation of the electronic device.

38. The electronic device of claim 37, wherein the plurality of modes comprises one of a radiotelephone mode, a navigational mode, a gaming mode, a music player mode, a video player mode, a picture display mode, a text capture mode, a picture capture mode, or a video capture mode.

39. The electronic device of claim 36, further comprising a luminescent device disposed beneath the segmented optical shutter, wherein the luminescent device is configured to project light through at least one segment of the segmented optical shutter in a transmissive mode.

40. The electronic device of claim 39, wherein the luminescent device further comprises a reflective layer coupled thereto so as to operate in a reflective mode when the luminescent device is inactive, and in a transflective mode when the luminescent device is active.

41. The electronic device of claim 36, wherein the user interface further comprises a display region and a navigation region.

42. The electronic device of claim 41, further comprising a cover layer disposed atop the user interface, wherein the cover layer comprises a tactile demarcation of the navigation region.

43. The electronic device of claim 41, further comprising a high resolution display disposed beneath the display region, wherein the segmented optical shutter covers at least a portion of the high resolution display.

44. The electronic device of claim 37, wherein each of the segments is geometrically structured as an alphanumeric or device key symbol for the electronic device.
