Abstract

A method and apparatus identifies a region of interest of transient vibration data needing analysis and provides context and construction for analytical plots. The method comprises providing transient data and determining a region of interest of the transient data, specifying a construction mode corresponding to a derived graphical display of the transient data and specifying a construction parameter corresponding to the specified construction mode. The method also comprises processing the transient data to produce at least one derived plot based on the transient data, the region of interest, the specified construction mode, and the specified construction parameters. This method may be performed by a graphical tool having a hardware module and a software module. The hardware module including a processor, a memory, a display, and a communicator, and the software module including a plotting module and a plotcontrol module.

Claims

1. A method for processing and displaying transient data comprising:

a. providing transient data,

b. determining a region of interest leading edge,

C. determining a region of interest trailing edge, which, in conjunction with the region of interest leading edge, determines the region of interest of transient data requiring analysis,

d. specifying a construction mode corresponding to a derived graphical display of the transient data.

e. specifying a construction parameter corresponding to the specified construction mode, and

f. processing the transient data to produce at least one derived plot based at least in part on the transient data, the region of interest, the specified construction mode, and the specified construction parameters.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a delta time construction mode.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a delta rpm construction mode.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a fixed number construction mode.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a delta time construction mode and the construction parameter is a delta time criterion.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a delta rpm construction mode and the construction parameter is a delta rpm criterion.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the construction mode is a fixed number construction mode and the construction parameter is a fixed number criterion.

8. An apparatus for processing and displaying transient data comprising:

a. a sensing instrument for sensing and providing transient data,

b. a data processing apparatus for receiving the transient data, determining a region of interest leading edge, determining a region of interest trailing edge, which, in conjunction with the region of interest leading edge, determines the region of interest of transient machine vibration data requiring analysis,

c. the data processing apparatus being further operable for populating at least one derived plot selected from a group including at least one of cascade plots, average shaft centerline plots, and Bode/Nyquist plots, said derived plot being based at least in part on the transient vibration data and the region of interest, and

d. a display for receiving and displaying the derived plot

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the data processor is further operable:

a. to select a construction mode from a group including delta time construction mode, a fixed number construction mode, and a delta rpm construction mode,

b. to select at least one construction parameter corresponding to the selected construction mode, and

c. to populate the derived plot based in part on the selected construction mode and the selected construction parameter.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the data processor is further operable to populate the derived plot based in part on a construction mode that determines the manner in which the data is sampled.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the construction mode is one of the delta time construction mode, the fixed number construction mode, and the delta rpm construction mode.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the construction mode is the delta time construction mode and the construction parameter is a delta time criterion.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the construction mode is the delta rpm construction mode and the construction parameter is a delta rpm criterion.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the construction mode is the fixed number construction mode and the construction parameter is a fixed number criterion.

15. A vibration analysis instrument comprising:

a. a hardware module having;

i. a vibration sensing instrument for collecting transient data representing vibration,

ii. a processor,

iii. a memory connected to the processor, the memory for storing and accessing the software module,

iv. a display connected to the processor, the display for displaying at least one of the transient data, a region of interest in the transient data, and an analytical plot based on the region of interest, and

v. a communicator connected to the processor, the communicator for communicating with the vibration sensing instrument; and

b. a software module having;

i. a plotcontrol module having a tools module containing tools used by the plotting module, said tools including a graphical tool for identifying a region of interest representing transient data chosen by a user and

ii. a plotting module for deriving the analytical plot based on the region of interest.

16. The instrument of claim 15 further comprising a graphics module for drawing the region of interest on the display.

17. The instrument of claim 15 wherein the plotcontrol module of the software module has a raise events module for setting an event flag in a positive position when an event occurs.

18. The instrument of claim 15 wherein the plotcontrol module of the software module has an automation module for stepping the region of interest through time.

19. The instrument of claim 15 wherein the plotting module of the software module has a managing module for managing at least one construction mode and its associated at least one construction parameter.

20. The instrument of claim 15 wherein the plotcontrol module of the software module has a raise events module for setting an event flag for notifying other software modules when an event occurs, and the plotting module of the software module has an event response module for responding to the event flag.
