Abstract

Embodiments of methods and systems to generate an enhanced layered display system are described herein. In one embodiment, a method of generating an enhanced layered display system is provided including dispensing an optical bonding liquid onto a first substrate; forming an adhesive preform unit by curing the optical bonding liquid on the first substrate; and laminating the adhesive preform unit to a second substrate to form the enhanced layered display system, where one of the first substrate and the second substrate is a display.

Claims

1. A method of generating an enhanced layered display system, comprising:

dispensing an optical bonding liquid onto a first substrate;

forming an adhesive preform unit by curing the optical bonding liquid on the first substrate; and

laminating the adhesive preform unit to a second substrate to form the enhanced layered display system, where one of the first substrate and the second substrate is a display.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second substrate is one of a liquid crystal display, an organic light emitting display and an electronic paper display.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein dispensing an optical bonding liquid includes dispensing an adhesive index matched to one or both of the first substrate and the second substrate.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein dispensing an optical bonding liquid includes dispensing a two-part platinum cured silicone adhesive.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein dispensing an optical bonding liquid includes dispensing the bonding material onto one of a glass overlay and a plastic overlay.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein dispensing an optical bonding liquid and forming an adhesive preform unit are performed in a first location and laminating the adhesive preform unit to a second substrate is performed in a second location.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein forming an adhesive preform unit includes positioning the first substrate in an adhesive pool and filling the adhesive pool to a select level to create a predefined uniform bond-line thickness across the substrate.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein filling the adhesive pool includes extending the optical bonding liquid beyond a perimeter of the first substrate to substantially reduce edge-effects.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein forming an adhesive preform unit includes leveling the optical bonding liquid on the first substrate by drawing an edger across a top surface of the bonding material.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein curing the optical bonding liquid includes heating one or both of the dispensed optical bonding liquid and the first substrate.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first substrate is a non-planer overlay.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first substrate is a non-rectangular overlay.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein curing the optical bonding liquid includes heating the first substrate using IR heaters.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein curing the optical bonding liquid includes heating the bonding material and first substrate to at least 150°

C.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein laminating the adhesive preform unit to the second substrate includes deforming the first substrate during laminating to reduce air bubble formation.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising processing the enhanced layered display system with at least one of pressure and heat to reduce optical flaws from air bubble formation.

17. An adhesive preform unit, comprising:

an overlay; and

a fully-cured adhesive preform coupled to the overlay;

wherein the unit is configured to be laminated to a display.

18. The unit of claim 17 wherein the adhesive preform is index-matched to the overlay

19. The unit of claim 17, wherein the adhesive is a two-part platinum cured silicone adhesive.

20. The unit of claim 17, wherein the overlay is one of a glass overlay and a plastic overlay.

21. The unit of claim 17, wherein the adhesive is a self-curing adhesive.

22. The unit of claim 21, wherein the unit is configured to be heated to accelerate curing.

23. The unit of claim 20, wherein the preform extends beyond a periphery of the overlay.

24. The unit of claim 20, wherein the preform is a shaped preform.

25. The unit of claim 17, wherein the display is one of a liquid crystal display, an organic light emitting display and an electronic paper display.

26. A method of forming an adhesive preform unit, comprising:

dispensing a liquid silicone adhesive onto a substrate sheet;

curing the adhesive on the substrate sheet to form an adhesive preform;

cutting the substrate sheet into individual adhesive preform units for lamination to a display.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the display is one of a liquid crystal display, an organic light emitting display and an electronic paper display.

28. The method of claim 26, further comprising laminating the individual adhesive preform units to the display.
