Abstract

Systems and methods for aiding individuals to complete tasks of daily living are provided. The situationally aware system comprises a controller, sensors, and effectors. The controller may include a program that describes a sequence of steps the user should perform to accomplish the task. In response to the information from the sensors and the user'"'"'s compliance with the steps of the sequence, the controller instructs the effector(s) to relay at least one instructional cue to the user to aid in the performance of the task. The instructional cue may range from a simple blinking light, to detailed audio and/or visual instructions, to relaying a reward for the completion of the task. The instructional cue may also instruct the user to refrain from performing a task. The system is programmable, configurable, and may interface to the Internet.

Claims

1. A system to provide instructional cues to a user, comprising:

a controller;

at least one memory for storing a plurality of instructional cues;

at least one proximity sensor for detecting proximity of the user; and

at least one compliance sensor for detecting compliance of the user with at least one instructional cue,

wherein the controller is in communication with the at least one proximity sensor and the at least one compliance sensor, such that during activation of the at least one proximity sensor the controller in response to the compliance sensor selects an instructional cue from the plurality of instructional cues to relay to the user.

2. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a clock for measuring time, wherein the controller is further in communication with the clock, and wherein the controller selects the instructional cue in response to the compliance sensor and the clock.

The system according to claim 1, further comprising an additional sensor selac et from the group consisting of object sensors for detecting interaction of the user with an object, environmental sensors for detecting environmental conditions, user action sensors for determining an action of the user, and combinations thereof, wherein the controller is further in communication with the additional sensor and wherein the controller selects the instructional cue in response to the compliance sensor and the additional sensor.

4. The system according to claim 1, further comprising an interface for communicating information about the user to a third party.

5. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a first interface for loading a program into the controller.

6. The system according to claim 5, further comprising a means for testing the program by simulating signals from the proximity sensor and the compliance sensor.

7. The system according to claim 5, further comprising a second interface for communicating information about the user to a third party.

8. The system according to claim 7, wherein the second interface comprises a network interface.

9. The system according to claim 1, wherein the at least one instructional cue instructs the user to refrain from performing a task.

10. The system according to claim 1, further comprising means for distinguishing between a plurality of users.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein the controller automatically adapts a program in response to a history of compliance of the user with at least one previous instructional cue to improve compliance of the user with the at least one instructional cue.

12. The system according to claim 1, wherein the controller automatically adapts the at least one instructional cue in response to a history of compliance with at least one previous instructional cue to improve the compliance of the user with the at least one instructional cue.

13. The system according to claim 1, further comprising an interface for loading a new instructional cue into the memory.

14. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a reward effector in communication with the controller and the compliance sensor, wherein the reward effector in response to the controller and the compliance sensor relays a reward.

15. The system according to claim 14, wherein the reward is selected from the group consisting of laudatory messages, physical rewards, visual rewards, audible rewards, music, and combinations thereof.

16. The system according to claim 1, further comprising at least one effector in communication with the controller, wherein the controller communicates the selected instructional cue to the effector and the effector relays the selected instructional cue to the user.

17. The system according to claim 16, wherein the effector dispenses at least one object for collection by the user.

18. The system according to claim 16, further comprising:

a base unit comprising at least the controller; and

at least one remote unit, separate from the base unit and in communication with the base unit, the remote unit comprising a component selected from the group consisting of effectors, compliance sensors, proximity sensors, environmental sensors, user action sensors, object sensors, and combinations thereof.

19. The system according to claim 18, wherein the at least one remote unit comprises at least one effector and a memory for storing the at least one instructional cue.

20. The system according to claim 18, further comprising a wireless communications interface for wireless communications between the base unit and the at least one remote unit.

21. The system according to claim 18, wherein the at least one remote unit comprises a plurality of remote units, each remote unit comprising an identification code for identification by the controller, and wherein the system further comprises a means for associating additional remote units with the base unit.

22. The system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is a remote controller, the system further comprising an interface for communicating with at least one of the remote controller and the memory.

23. A method for providing instructional cues to a user, comprising:

detecting proximity of a user;

detecting compliance of the user with at least one first instructional cue;

selecting at least one second instructional cue from a plurality of instructional cues in response to proximity of the user and compliance of the user with the at least one first instructional cue;

relaying the at least one second instructional cue to the user.

24. The method according to claim 23, further comprising rewarding the user in response to compliance of the user with an instructional cue selected from the group consisting of the at least one first instructional cue and the at least one second instructional cue.

25. The method according to claim 23, further comprising detecting a time, wherein the selecting at least one second instructional cue is in response to proximity of the user, compliance of the user with the first instructional cue, and time.

26. The method according to claim 23, wherein the at least one second instructional cue instructs the user to refrain from performing a task.
