Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention recite a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collection network. In one embodiment, the present invention comprises a mobile electronic device that was not originally intended for use as a GIS data collector. The present invention further comprises a data dictionary forwarding device communicatively coupled with the mobile electronic device and a GIS data management component communicatively coupled with the data dictionary forwarding device for receiving GIS data collected by the mobile electronic device.

Claims

1. A Geographic Information System (GIS) network comprising:

a mobile electronic device that was not originally intended for use as a GIS data collector;

a data dictionary forwarding device communicatively coupled with said mobile electronic device; and

a GIS data management component communicatively coupled with said data dictionary forwarding device for receiving GIS data collected by said mobile electronic device.

2. The GIS network of claim 1 wherein said mobile electronic device further comprises a GIS data collector application resident upon said mobile electronic device.

3. The GIS network of claim 2 wherein said mobile electronic device further comprises a data dictionary comprising at least one GIS feature type.

4. The GIS network of claim 3 wherein a current version of said data dictionary is automatically forwarded to said mobile electronic device when said mobile electronic device initiates communications with said data dictionary forwarding device.

5. The GIS network of claim 2 wherein said GIS data collector application is further for storing collected GIS data on said mobile electronic device in response to determining that communications with said data dictionary forwarding device have not been established and for initiating the forwarding of the stored GIS data in response to determining that communications with said data dictionary forwarding device have been established.

6. The GIS network of claim 2 wherein said GIS data collector application is further for automatically forwarding collected GIS data in real-time from said mobile electronic device in response to receiving an indication to store the collected GIS data on said mobile electronic device and deleting the collected GIS data from said mobile electronic device in response to a confirmation message from said data dictionary forwarding device.

7. The GIS network of claim 6 wherein said GIS data collector application automatically deletes the collected GIS data from said mobile electronic device in response to said confirmation message.

8. The GIS network of claim 1 wherein said data dictionary storage device is further for automatically storing collected GIS data sent from said mobile electronic device and generating a confirmation message to said mobile electronic device for initiating the deletion of the collected GIS data from said mobile electronic device.

9. The GIS network of claim 8 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for automatically generating a message to said GIS data management component in response to said automatically storing said collected GIS data.

10. The GIS network of claim 9 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for sending the collected GIS data to said GIS data management component in response to a message therefrom and for automatically archiving the collected GIS data in response to said confirmation message.

11. The GIS network of claim 1 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for receiving configuration data comprising a unique identification of said mobile electronic device and an assigned membership of said mobile electronic device to a workgroup.

The GIS network of claim 11 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for determining a version of a data dictionary resident upon said mobile electronic device is not a current data dictionary and for automatically forwarding said current data dictionary to said mobile electronic device if said version of said data dictionary resident upon said mobile electronic device does not comprise said current version of said data dictionary.

The GIS network of claim 11 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for automatically selecting at least one GIS feature type for a data dictionary assigned to said mobile electronic device based upon said assigned membership of said mobile electronic device to said workgroup.

14. The GIS network of claim 1 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device is further for formatting a data dictionary for said mobile electronic device in a pre-defined manner which is selected based upon said mobile electronic device.

15. The GIS network of claim 14 wherein said data dictionary forwarding device determines the display capabilities of said mobile electronic device and formats said data dictionary based upon the display capabilities of said mobile electronic device.

16. The GIS network of claim 1 wherein said mobile electronic device is selected from the group consisting of a legacy cellular telephone, a legacy personal digital assistant (PDA), and a legacy mobile computer system.

17. A Geographic Information System (GIS) network comprising:

a legacy mobile electronic device configured for use as a GIS data collector;

a data dictionary management component for assigning a data dictionary to said legacy mobile electronic device based upon an assigned membership of said legacy mobile electronic device to a workgroup; and

a GIS data management component for assigning said legacy mobile electronic device said workgroup.

18. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said legacy mobile electronic device further comprises a GIS data collector application resident thereon for providing GIS data collection functionality to said legacy mobile electronic device.

19. The GIS network of claim 18 wherein said GIS data collector application is for forwarding collected GIS data to said data dictionary management component in real-time in response to an indication to save the collected GIS data.

20. The GIS network of claim 19 wherein wherein said GIS data collector application is further for deleting the collected GIS data in response to a confirmation message from said data dictionary management component that the collected GIS data has been received.

21. The GIS network of claim 20 wherein said GIS data collector application automatically deletes the collected GIS data from said legacy mobile electronic device in response to receiving said confirmation message.

22. The GIS network of claim 18 wherein said GIS data collector application is for storing the collected GIS data on said legacy mobile electronic device in response to determining that communications with said data dictionary management component are not established;

and

automatically forwarding the collected GIS data to said data dictionary management component in response to determining that communications have been established with said data dictionary management component.

23. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for automatically forwarding said data dictionary to said legacy mobile electronic device in response to establishing communications with said legacy mobile electronic device.

24. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for determining a version of a data dictionary resident upon said mobile electronic device is not a current data dictionary and for automatically forwarding said current data dictionary to said mobile electronic device if said version of said data dictionary resident upon said mobile electronic device does not comprise said current version of said data dictionary.

25. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for automatically selecting at least one GIS feature type for said data dictionary based upon said workgroup to which said legacy mobile electronic device is assigned.

26. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for formatting said data dictionary for said legacy mobile electronic device in a pre-defined manner which is selected based upon said legacy mobile electronic device.

27. The GIS network of claim 26 wherein said data dictionary management component determines the display capabilities of said legacy mobile electronic device and formats said data dictionary based upon the display capabilities of said legacy mobile electronic device.

28. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for automatically storing collected GIS data sent by said legacy mobile electronic device and for generating a confirmation message to said legacy mobile electronic device for initiating the deletion of the collected GIS data from said legacy mobile electronic device.

29. The GIS network of claim 28 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for automatically generating a message to said GIS data management component in response to storing the collected GIS data.

30. The GIS network of claim 29 wherein said data dictionary management component is further for automatically archiving the collected GIS data in response to a confirmation message from said GIS data management component that the collected GIS data has been received.

31. The GIS network of claim 17 wherein said legacy mobile electronic device is selected from the group consisting of a cellular telephone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), and a mobile computer system.

32. A Geographic Information System (GIS) network comprising:

a mobile cellular GIS data collection device that was not originally intended for use as a GIS data collector;

a data dictionary management system communicatively coupled with said mobile cellular GIS data collection device; and

a GIS data management component communicatively coupled with said data dictionary management system for receiving GIS data collected by said mobile cellular GIS data collection device.

The GIS network of claim 32 wherein said mobile cellular GIS data collection device comprises a legacy cellular device is not specifically designed to be used solely as a GIS data recording device and further comprises a GIS data collector application resident upon said mobile cellular GIS data collection device for enabling GIS data collector functionality for said mobile cellular GIS data collection device.

34. The GIS network of claim 33 wherein said mobile cellular GIS data collection device further comprises a data dictionary comprising at least one GIS feature type.

35. The GIS network of claim 34 wherein a current version of said data dictionary is automatically forwarded to said mobile cellular GIS data collection device when said mobile cellular GIS data collection device initiates communications with said data dictionary management system.

36. The GIS network of claim 33 wherein said GIS data collector application is further for storing collected GIS data on said mobile cellular GIS data collection device in response to determining that communications with said data dictionary management system have not been established and for initiating the forwarding of the stored GIS data in response to determining that communications with said data dictionary management system have been established.

37. The GIS network of claim 33 wherein said GIS data collector application is further for automatically forwarding collected GIS data in real-time from said mobile cellular GIS data collection device in response to receiving an indication to store the collected GIS data on said mobile cellular GIS data collection device and deleting the collected GIS data from said mobile cellular GIS data collection device in response to a confirmation message from said data dictionary management system.

38. The GIS network of claim 37 wherein said GIS data collector application automatically deletes the collected GIS data from said mobile cellular GIS data collection device in response to said confirmation message.

39. The GIS network of claim 32 wherein said data dictionary storage device is further for automatically storing collected GIS data sent from said mobile cellular GIS data collection device and generating a confirmation message to said mobile cellular GIS data collection device for initiating the deletion of the collected GIS data from said mobile cellular GIS data collection device.

40. The GIS network of claim 39 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for automatically generating a message to said GIS data management component in response to said automatically storing said collected GIS data.

41. The GIS network of claim 40 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for sending the collected GIS data to said GIS data management component in response to a message therefrom and for automatically archiving the collected GIS data in response to said confirmation message.

42. The GIS network of claim 32 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for receiving configuration data comprising a unique identification of said mobile cellular GIS data collection device and an assigned membership of said mobile cellular GIS data collection device to a workgroup.

43. The GIS network of claim 41 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for determining a version of a data dictionary resident upon said mobile cellular GIS data collection device is not a current data dictionary and for automatically forwarding said current data dictionary to said mobile cellular GIS data collection device if said version of said data dictionary resident upon said mobile cellular GIS data collection device does not comprise said current version of said data dictionary.

44. The GIS network of claim 42 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for automatically selecting at least one GIS feature type for a data dictionary assigned to said mobile cellular GIS data collection device based upon said assigned membership of said mobile cellular GIS data collection device to said workgroup.

45. The GIS network of claim 32 wherein said data dictionary management system is further for formatting a data dictionary for said mobile cellular GIS data collection device in a pre-defined manner which is selected based upon said mobile cellular GIS data collection device.

46. The GIS network of claim 45 wherein said data dictionary management system determines the display capabilities of said mobile cellular GIS data collection device and formats said data dictionary based upon the display capabilities of said mobile cellular GIS data collection device.
