Abstract

Electronic items may be searched using search indices. Search indices may be generated for electronic items at a user device. In that case, a list of one or more electronic items stored in memory of the user device may be displayed, and a status of index generation for the electronic items stored in memory of the device may be presented.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

displaying a list of one or more electronic items stored in memory of a device; and

providing a status of index generation for the one or more electronic items stored in memory of the device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the status of index generation comprises a status indicator associated with one or more of the electronic items in the list.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising presenting a priority interface, by which a user may set an order in which indexes are to be generated for electronic items in memory of the device.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising changing a priority order in which indexes are to be generated for electronic items in memory of the device.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising pausing index generation while performing a task.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising pausing index generation in response to one or more of the following:

operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising slowing index generation while performing a task.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising slowing index generation in response to one or more of the following:

playing an audio file or executing an application program.

9. One or more computer-readable media comprising computer-executable instructions to implement the method of claim 1.

10. A handheld electronic book reader device comprising:

a processor; and

memory storing an index module and instructions executable on the processor to implement the method of claim 1.

11. A method comprising:

displaying a list of one or more electronic items stored in memory of a device; and

changing a priority order in which indexes are to be generated for electronic items in memory of the device in response to user selection of an electronic item that has yet to be indexed.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising pausing or slowing index generation while performing a task.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising pausing index generation in response to one or more of the following:

operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising slowing index generation in response to one or more of the following:

playing an audio file or executing an application program.

15. A handheld electronic book reader comprising:

a processor;

a display configured to display information to a user; and

an indexing module including logic executable on the processor to index electronic items and to display a status of index generation on the display.

16. The handheld electronic book reader of claim 15, further comprising a user interface module configured to present a priority interface, by which a user may change an order in which indexes are to be generated for electronic items in memory of the device.

17. The handheld electronic book reader of claim 15, further comprising a user interface module configured to present a priority interface, by which a user may elect to download an index for an electronic item.

18. The handheld electronic book reader of claim 15, the indexing module further comprising logic configured to pause or slow index generation in response to one or more predetermined tasks executable on the processor.

19. The handheld electronic book reader of claim 15, the indexing module further comprising logic configured to pause index generation in response to one or more of the following:

operation of a button of the device, insertion of memory into the device, receipt of a new electronic item, or updating software of the device.

20. The handheld electronic book reader of claim 15, the indexing module further comprising logic configured to slow index generation in response to one or more of the following:

playing an audio file or executing an application program.
