Abstract

A therapy system for applying an electrical signal to an internal anatomical feature of a patient includes an implantable component and an external component. The implantable component is configured to receive a selected therapy program and a selected therapy schedule from the external component. The implantable component is adapted to be selectively configured into one of a training mode and a delivery mode. The implantable component is configured to apply therapy to the internal anatomical feature in accordance with the selected therapy program and the selected therapy schedule when configured in the delivery mode. The implantable component is configured to simulate application of therapy when configured in the training mode.

Claims

1. A system for applying therapy to an internal anatomical feature of a patient comprising:

an external component including an external antenna configured to be placed above a skin layer of a patient, the external component including a memory in which therapy programs and therapy schedules can be stored, the external component also including a user interface configured to receive input from a user and to display output to the user, the input including a selection of one of the therapy programs and one of the therapy schedules; and

an implantable component for placement in the body of the patient beneath the skin layer, the implantable component including an implanted antenna configured to communicate with the external antenna across the skin layer through radiofrequency communication, the implantable component configured to receive the selected therapy program and the selected therapy schedule from the external component via the external and implanted antennas, the implantable component being adapted to be selectively configured into one of a training mode and a delivery mode, the implantable component configured to apply therapy to the internal anatomical feature in accordance with the selected therapy program and the selected therapy schedule when configured in the delivery mode, and the implantable component configured to simulate application of therapy when configured in the training mode and to not apply therapy.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising

at least one electrode configured to be implanted within a body of the patient beneath the skin layer and adjacent the anatomical feature, the electrode being communicatively coupled to the implantable component and being configured to apply therapy to the anatomical feature when instructed by the implantable component when the implantable component is configured in the delivery mode.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the implantable component instructs the electrode to apply a non-therapy signal to the anatomical feature when the implantable component is configured in the training mode.

The system of claim 1, wherein the implantable component is configured to apply therapy according to a second therapy program when the second therapy program is selected at the external component and transmitted from the external component to the implantable component if the implantable component is configured in the delivery mode.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the implantable component sends data to the external component indicating whether the treatment is being delivered according to the selected therapy program and the selected therapy schedule when the implantable component is configured in the delivery mode.

The system of claim 1, wherein the implantable component is configured to not apply therapy according to a second therapy program when the second therapy program is selected at the external component and transmitted from the external component to the implantable component if the implantable component is configured in the training mode.

The system of claim 1, wherein the implantable component sends dummy data to the external component when the implantable component is configured in training mode, the dummy date appearing to indicate whether the treatment is being delivered according to the selected therapy program and the selected therapy schedule.
