Abstract

A method for scoring and ranking multi-dimensional project plans for implementing packaged software applications, the method includes: determining one or more dimensions for a project plan; assigning one or more attributes to each of the one or more dimensions; assigning one or more utility functions to each of the one or more attributes; assigning one or more weights to each of the one or more attributes; assigning one or more ordering factors to one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions; calculating a series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions; ranking the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions based on the calculated series of scores; and wherein each of the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions represents a different individual multi-dimensional project plan.

Claims

1. A method for scoring and ranking multi-dimensional project plans for implementing packaged software applications, the method comprising:

determining one or more dimensions for a project plan;

assigning one or more attributes to each of the one or more dimensions;

assigning one or more utility functions to each of the one or more attributes;

assigning one or more weights to each of the one or more attributes;

assigning one or more ordering factors to one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions;

calculating a series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions;

ranking the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions based on the calculated series of scores; and

wherein each of the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions represents a different individual multi-dimensional project plan.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a series of attribute values for the one or more attributes is inputted through a series of questionnaires.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the series of attribute values are assigned to the utility functions to determine a series of corresponding utility values.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the utility functions are at least one of the following:

step functions, non-linear functions, and linear functions.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the utility functions maybe either a qualitative or quantitative measures.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating the series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions is carried out with one or more project plan score estimators in signal communication with one or more estimation knowledge bases;

and

wherein each of the project plan score estimators utilizes one or more mathematical models based on multi-attribute utility (MAU) theory with empirical data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating a series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions further comprises the following:

the calculation of one or more scores for a single-dimensional project plan that is a weight average utility value across involved attributes multiplied by one or more dimensional ordering factors; and

wherein the calculation scales up the score comparable to those of multi-dimensional project plans.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating a series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions further comprises the following:

the calculation of one or more scores for a multi-dimensional implementation project plan is the summation of the weight average utility value across involved attributes of each dimension, multiplied by ordering factors;

wherein the calculation normalizes a resulting score comparable to resulting scores of other implementation project plans; and

wherein the resulting scores reflect the effect of the orders of the involved dimensions.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the ranked multi-dimensional plans are grouped according to a primary dimension;

wherein the primary dimension is the first dimension listed in a given multi-dimensional plan;

wherein the groupings are coded for visual identification; and

wherein the coding comprises;

colors, textures, shapes, and fonts.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the grouping provides a visual indication of the consistency and validity of the scoring and ranking of the multi-dimensional project plans.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein one or more sensitivity analyses of the project plans may be conducted by changing one or more of the following:

attributes, attribute weightings, and attribute utilities.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein a series of complete trees that show all combinations of multi-dimensional project plans are displayed to facilitate the adjustment of the multi-dimensional project plans.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the plan dimensions that are taken into account in structuring packaged application projects plans include geography by continent, country, business unit, and business scenario to form a plurality of single-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional project plans;

and

wherein geography by continent and country are never used together within an individual multi-dimensional project plan.

14. A system for scoring and ranking multi-dimensional project plans for implementing packaged software applications, the system comprising:

a view layer configured to act as a user interface for user inputs and system outputs;

a model and control layer configured to implement rules based on a series of estimation and implementation models, and to perform calculations to determine scores for ranking multi-dimensional project plans;

an estimation knowledge base layer configured to hold and derive the series of estimation and implementation models; and

wherein the system for scoring and ranking multi-dimensional project plans for implementing packaged software applications is carried out over networks comprising;

the Internet, intranets, local area networks (LAN), and wireless local area networks (WLAN).

15. The system of claim 14, wherein calculations to determine one or more scores for ranking multi-dimensional project plans is carried out with one or more project plan score estimators;

wherein the one or more project plan score estimators determine one or more dimensions for a project plan based on the series of estimation and implementation models;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assigns one or more attributes to each of the one or more dimensions;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assigns one or more utility functions to each of the one or more attributes;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assigns one or more weights to each of the one or more attributes;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assigns one or more ordering factors to one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assigns the attributes, the utility functions, the weights, and the ordering factors based the series of estimation and implementation models;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers calculate a series of scores for one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers rank the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions based on the calculated series of scores; and

wherein each of the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions represents a different individual multi-dimensional project plan.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein a series of attribute values for the one or more attributes are inputted through a series of questionnaires presented and answered in the view layer;

wherein the one or more project plan scorers assign the attribute values to the utility functions to determine a series of corresponding utility values;

wherein the utility functions are at least one of the following;

step functions, non-linear functions, and linear functions; and

wherein the utility functions may be either a qualitative or quantitative measures.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the project plan score estimator utilizes a mathematical model based on multi-attribute utility (MAU) theory with empirical data to calculate the series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein calculating the series of scores for the one or more combinations and permutations of the dimensions further comprises the following:

the calculation of one or more scores for a single-dimensional project plan that is a weight average utility value across involved attributes multiplied by a single dimensional ordering factor;

wherein the single-dimensional calculation scales up the score comparable to those of multi-dimensional project plans;

wherein the calculation of one or more scores for a multi-dimensional implementation project plan is the summation of the weight average utility value across involved attributes of each dimension, multiplied by ordering factors;

wherein the multi-dimensional calculation normalizes a resulting score comparable to resulting scores of other implementation project plans; and

wherein the resulting scores reflect the effect of the orders of the involved dimensions.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the ranked multi-dimensional plans are grouped according to a primary dimension;

wherein the primary dimension is the first dimension listed in a given multi-dimensional plan;

wherein the groupings are coded for visual identification;

wherein the coding comprises;

colors, textures, shapes, and fonts; and

wherein the grouping provides a visual indication of the consistency and validity of the scoring and ranking of the multi-dimensional project plans.

20. The system of claim 15, wherein sensitivity analysis of the project plans may be conducted by one or more of the following:

changing attributes, changing attribute weightings, and changing attribute utilities; and

wherein a series of complete trees that show all combinations of multi-dimensional project plans are displayed in the view layer to facilitate the adjustment of the multi-dimensional project plans.
