Abstract

A dialysis system includes a dialysis instrument including at least one pump actuator; a disposable cassette operable with the at least one pump actuator; a plurality of supply containers connected fluidly to the disposable cassette; and a cart which includes a rotatable bearing plate onto which the instrument and supply containers are loaded, the bearing plate allowing a patient to turn the instrument and supply containers relative to the cart for selective access to the instrument or the supply containers.

Claims

1. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including at least one pump actuator;

a disposable cassette operable with the at least one pump actuator;

a plurality of supply containers connected fluidly to the disposable cassette; and

a cart which includes a rotatable bearing plate onto which the instrument and supply containers are loaded, the bearing plate allowing a patient to turn the instrument and supply containers relative to the cart for selective access to the instrument or the supply containers.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the cart includes rollers.

3. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the cart includes a handle that folds up and down, towards and away from the instrument, respectively.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1, which includes a plurality of supply container trays connected hingedly to the dialysis instrument.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1, which includes a video monitor connected hingedly to the dialysis instrument.

6. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the cart includes a shelf sized to hold a drain container connected fluidly to the cassette such that all of the containers of the system are supported by and moveable with the cart.

7. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein tubes from the supply containers terminate at a first organizer, tubes from the disposable cassette terminate at a second organizer, the instrument configured to load the first and second organizers in alignment for connection of the supply container tubes to the cassette tubes.

8. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including at least one pump actuator;

a disposable cassette operable with the at least one pump actuator;

a plurality of supply containers connected to the disposable cassette; and

a tray for each supply container, the trays connected hingedly to the dialysis instrument.

9. The dialysis system of claim 8, the instrument having a front side including a user interface, the trays connected to a back side of the interface.

10. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the trays are oriented one on top of another.

11. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the trays are tilted to allow air to be captured in the supply containers resting on the trays.

12. The dialysis system of claim 8, wherein the trays are configured to provide selective access to each tray.

13. The dialysis system of claim 8, which includes a container loading sequence in which a bottom tray is rotated into its container loading position after which a first supply container is loaded onto the bottom tray, after which a second tray located above the bottom tray is folded into its container loading position, after which a second supply container is loaded onto the second tray.

14. The dialysis system of claim 13, wherein the bottom tray and second tray are folded from an at least substantially vertical position to their container loading positions.

15. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including at least one pump actuator;

a disposable cassette operable with the at least one pump actuator, the disposable cassette including a plurality of supply lines;

a supply container for each supply line of the cassette, each supply container including a solution line connectable to one of the supply lines; and

a device configured to enable the number of supply containers to be increased for a higher volume treatment.

16. The dialysis system of claim 15, the plurality of supply lines being originating supply lines, and wherein the volume increasing device includes a plurality of branch supply lines, each branch supply line diverging from one of the originating supply lines of the disposable cassette.

17. The dialysis system of claim 16, which includes a clamp on each originating supply line.

18. The dialysis system of claim 15, wherein the volume increasing device includes a manifold configured to expand one of the supply lines of the cassette from being operable with one supply container to being operable with a plurality of supply containers.

19. The dialysis system of claim 18, the instrument including a mechanism configured to hold, interchangeably, a connector located at one end of one of the supply lines or a connector located at an end of a manifold line of the manifold, the manifold line in communication with each of a plurality of branch lines of the manifold.

20. The dialysis system of claim 18, which includes a device configured to recognize whether a line interfacing with the instrument is one of the solution lines from one of the supply containers or a line from the volume increasing manifold.

21. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis instrument including at least one pump actuator;

a disposable cassette operable with the at least one pump actuator;

a multi-chamber supply container including a frangible seal, the multi-chamber supply container configured to be connected fluidly to the disposable cassette; and

an emitter and a receiver positioned to contact the multi-chamber supply container, such that an electrical signal received by the receiver from the emitter when the seal is unopened is different than an electrical signal received by the receiver from the emitter when the seal is opened.

22. The dialysis system of claim 21, wherein the emitter and receiver are located on a tray configured to support the multi-chamber supply container.

23. The dialysis system of claim 21, which includes a plurality of emitters and a plurality of receivers positioned to contact the multi-chamber supply container, such that electrical signals received by each receiver from at least two emitters form characteristic signal patterns for different container loading orientations.

24. The dialysis system of claim 23, wherein the emitters and receivers are located on a tray, one of the container loading orientations being a correct orientation and having a unique characteristic signal pattern relative to characteristic signal patterns of other container loading orientations.

25. The dialysis system of claim 23, which includes a sequencer that sequences through different emitter and receiver pairs, and in which an emitter in one sequence stage functions as a receiver in another sequence stage.

26. The dialysis system of claim 23, which includes a controller operable with the emitters and receivers to determine (i) if the container has been loaded properly;

and (ii) if the seal has been opened prior to patient delivery.

27. The dialysis system of claim 23, which includes a controller operable with the emitters and receivers to determine if solutions contained in the container prior to mixing are proper for delivery to a patient.

28. The dialysis system of claim 21, which includes a plurality of multi-chamber supply containers and a plurality of emitters and receivers for each of the multi-chamber supply containers, and which includes a controller further operable to determine which container (i) has not been loaded properly;

or (ii) does not have an open seal prior to patient delivery.

29. The dialysis system of claim 21, which includes a controller operable with the emitter and receiver to determine if the container holds a properly mixed medical fluid.

30. The dialysis system of claim 21, the emitter and receiver including an electrical coil.

31. The dialysis system of claim 21, which includes a signal source supplying the electrical signal to the emitter.
