Abstract

Systems and methods in accordance with various embodiments of the present invention provide for representing a hierarchical dataset as graphical elements in a configurable data visualization having at least one graphical attribute. At least one aggregate function of a plurality of aggregate functions are determined. Aggregate values of the hierarchical dataset for each hierarchical depth level is determined. The aggregate function is used to determine the aggregate values. The data visualization based on the aggregate values is rendered.

Claims

1. A method for representing a hierarchical dataset as graphical elements in a configurable data visualization having at least one graphical attribute, the method comprising:

determining at least one aggregate function of a plurality of aggregate functions;

determining aggregate values of the hierarchical dataset for each hierarchical depth level, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine one or more of the aggregate values; and

rendering the data visualization based on the aggregate values.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the at least one aggregate function includes receiving through a user interface a selection of the at least one aggregate function.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the determination of the at least one aggregate function is based on selection intelligence.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting an aggregate function based on the inherent properties of a type of the data visualization.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting a summation aggregate function for a two-dimensional space-filling data visualization.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting an aggregate function having a metric which is the same as a metric used to determine values of the dataset.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting an average aggregate function where the values of the dataset are computed averages.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting a summation aggregation function where the values of the dataset are computed sums.

9. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting an aggregation function based on a type of the at least one graphical attribute.

10. The method of claim 3, wherein the selection intelligence includes selecting an average aggregation function where the at least one graphical attribute is a color graphical attribute.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine all the aggregate values for all depth levels and for all graphical attributes.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine the aggregate values for a single depth level.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine the aggregate values for a single graphical attribute.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising generating a data table for each hierarchical depth level, the data table including the determined aggregate values per hierarchical depth level.

15. A computer program product stored on a computer-readable medium for representing a hierarchical dataset as graphical elements in a configurable data visualization having at least one graphical attribute, the computer program product comprising:

code for determining at least one aggregate function of a plurality of aggregate functions;

code for determining aggregate values of the hierarchical dataset for each hierarchical depth level, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine one or more of the aggregate values; and

code for rendering the data visualization based on the aggregate values.

16. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein determining the at least one aggregate function includes receiving through a user interface a selection of the at least one aggregate function.

17. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the determination of the at least one aggregate function is based on selection intelligence.

18. A system for representing a plurality of data values of a hierarchical dataset as graphical elements in a configurable data visualization, the system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory configured to store a plurality of code modules which when executed by the processor cause the processor to;

determine at least one aggregate function of a plurality of aggregate functions;

determine aggregate values of the hierarchical dataset for each hierarchical depth level, wherein the at least one aggregate function is used to determine one or more of the aggregate values; and

render the data visualization based on the aggregate values.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein determining the at least one aggregate function includes receiving through a user interface a selection of the at least one aggregate function.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the determination of the at least one aggregate function is based on selection intelligence.
