Abstract

Disclosed is a unique filter assembly for ensuring replacement cartridge compatibility in filtration systems having replaceable filter cartridges with lugged mounting systems. One representative filter assembly includes a representative cartridge member having a body portion for enclosing filter media and a neck portion depending therefrom. The representative neck portion of the representative cartridge includes at least one axial inlet port for directing unfiltered fluid into the body portion and at least one axial outlet port for directing filtered fluid out of the body portion. The representative neck portion also has at least two representative lugs depending radially outwardly therefrom, wherein at least one lug defines a keyed surface formation.

Claims

1. A filter cartridge comprising:

a body portion configured to contain at least one filter media; and

a neck portion depending from the body portion;

wherein the neck portion comprises an inlet port for directing a fluid into the body portion, an outlet port for directing the fluid out of the body portion, and at least two lugs depending radially therefrom, each of the at least two lugs comprising;

an inclined cam surface facing substantially toward the body portion; and

a keyed surface formation comprising a first axial engagement surface facing substantially away from the body portion, at least one additional axial engagement surface projecting from the first axial engagement surface, a first radial engagement surface facing substantially away from the neck portion and positioned a first distance away from the neck portion, and at least one additional radial engagement surface projecting from the first radial engagement surface.

2. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein the axial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

3. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein the radial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

4. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein the axial engagement surfaces on each lug are different and wherein the radial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

5. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein each at least one additional axial engagement surface is a tooth disposed in one of a predetermined array of axial tooth positions.

6. The filter cartridge of claim 5 wherein the predetermined array of axial tooth positions comprises three axial tooth positions.

7. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein each at least one additional radial engagement surface is a tooth disposed in one of a predetermined array of radial tooth positions.

8. The filter cartridge of claim 7 wherein the predetermined array of radial tooth positions comprises three radial tooth positions.

9. The filter cartridge of claim 1 wherein the inclined cam surface comprises a rounded surface.

10. A filter cartridge comprising:

a body portion configured to contain at least one filter media; and

a neck portion depending from the body portion;

wherein the neck portion comprises an inlet port for directing a fluid into the body portion, an outlet port for directing the fluid out of the body portion, and at least two lugs depending radially therefrom, each of the at least two lugs comprising;

an inclined cam surface facing substantially toward the body portion; and

a keyed surface formation comprising a first axial engagement surface facing substantially away from the body portion, at least one additional axial engagement surface projecting from the first axial engagement surface, wherein the keyed surface formation of each lug is substantially different.

11. A filter cartridge comprising:

a body portion configured to contain at least one filter media; and

a neck portion depending from the body portion;

wherein the neck portion comprises an inlet port for directing a fluid into the body portion, an outlet port for directing the fluid out of the body portion, and at least two lugs depending radially therefrom, each of the at least two lugs comprising;

an inclined cam surface facing substantially toward the body portion; and

a keyed surface formation comprising a first axial engagement surface facing substantially away from the body portion, at least one additional axial engagement surface projecting from the first axial engagement surface, wherein the keyed surface formation is configured to engage a complimentary keyed surface formation on a corresponding reception assembly.

12. The filter cartridge of claim 11 wherein the keyed surface formation further comprises a first radial engagement surface facing substantially away from the neck portion and positioned a first distance away from the neck portion, and at least one additional radial engagement surface projecting from the first radial engagement surface.

13. A filter cartridge comprising:

a body portion configured to contain at least one filter media; and

a neck portion depending from the body portion;

wherein the neck portion comprises an inlet port for directing a fluid into the body portion, an outlet port for directing the fluid out of the body portion, and at least two lugs depending radially therefrom, each of the at least two lugs comprising;

an inclined cam surface facing substantially toward the body portion and a substantially horizontal surface facing substantially toward the body portion and adjoining the inclined cam surface; and

a keyed surface formation comprising a first axial engagement surface facing substantially away from the body portion and at least one additional axial engagement surface projecting from the first axial engagement surface.

The filter cartridge of claim 13 wherein the keyed surface formation further comprises a first radial engagement surface facing substantially away from the neck portion and positioned a first distance away from the neck portion, and at least one additional radial engagement surface projecting from the first radial engagement surface.

15. The filter cartridge claim 13 wherein the axial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

16. The filter cartridge claim 14 wherein the axial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

17. The filter cartridge of claim 14 wherein the radial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.

18. The filter cartridge of claim 16 wherein the radial engagement surfaces on each lug are different.
