Abstract

A multi-layered wound dressing includes a moisture-retaining portion for enhancing the healing of a wound. The wound dressing includes an intermediate layer that has both water soluble and water insoluble fibers. An apparatus that includes a cutting tool and a reservoir of liquid to pre-moisten a portion of the dressing may be used to manufacture the dressings.

28. An apparatus for manufacturing a custom wound dressing corresponding to an identified wound, the apparatus comprising:

a case providing a sterile interior environment;

a wound dressing material contained within the sterile interior environment;

at least a first dispenser provided within the sterile interior environment and structured to selectively dispense a corresponding first dispensable liquid to a selected portion of the wound dressing material; and

a first relative movement mechanism disposed within the sterile interior environment and providing selectively controlled relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, further comprising a base structured to be disposed externally of the case and to be operably engageable with an exterior portion of the case, the base including control electronics for providing said selectively controlled relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the base includes user operable control buttons.

31. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the wound dressing material is at least partially disposed on a material supplying roll provided within the case.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the wound dressing material is at least partially disposed on a material take-up roll provided within the case.

33. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the case is detachable from the base.

34. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the first dispensable liquid is a member of the group consisting of a moisturizing solution, a water repellant, and an adhesive.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the sterile interior environment further contains a second dispenser structured to selectively dispense a corresponding second dispensable liquid to a selected portion of the wound dressing material and the second dispensable liquid is a member of said group but different from said first dispensable liquid.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the sterile interior environment further contains a third dispenser structured to selectively dispense a corresponding third dispensable liquid to a selected portion of the wound dressing material and the third dispensable liquid is a member of said group but different from said first and second dispensable liquids.

37. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the case includes:

a frame;

a stage provided on the frame;

a dressing material dispenser carried by the frame and adapted for dispensing a portion of the wound dressing material onto the stage;

a cutting tool; and

a cutting tool carrying mechanism disposed on the frame and structured for providing selective relative movement between the cutting tool and the wound dressing material.

38. The apparatus of claim 37, further comprising control electronics external of the case and operably engageable with the case to control said relative movements of at least the first dispenser and the cutting tool relative to the wound dressing material.

39. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the base includes a hinged lid holding an ultraviolet germicidal lamp and the case includes a window through which the lamp can transmit ultraviolet light into the interior of the case.

40. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the at least first dispenser includes a capillary tube having a first end coupled to a source of said first dispensable liquid and an opposed end defining a nozzle for delivering the first dispensable liquid to the wound dressing material.

41. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the base includes a pumping actuator for actuating a pumping of the first dispensable liquid.

42. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the at least first motor of the base is operably couplable to one of a cutting tool mechanism, a wound dressing material dispenser mechanism, or a packaging mechanism inside the case.

43. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the base includes a gas pump operably couplable to the case for pumping a gas into the case.

44. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the base includes at least a first motor for powering said relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser.

45. A method of manufacturing a custom wound dressing corresponding to an identified wound, the method comprising:

providing a container having a sterile interior and having within said sterile interior;

a wound dressing material, at least a first dispenser of a first dispensable liquid, and at least one relative movement mechanism that can provide controlled relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser; and

operably coupling the container to a base, where the base includes control electronics for controlling said controlled relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes at least a first motor for powering said relative movement between the wound dressing material and the first dispenser, the method including using the first motor for powering said relative movement.

47. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes at least a first pumping actuator for providing pumping power for dispensing said first dispensable liquid, the method including using the first pumping actuator for providing pumping power for dispensing said first dispensable liquid.

48. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes at least a first motor for powering dispensing of the wound dressing material, the method including using the first motor for powering dispensing of the wound dressing material inside said sterile interior.

49. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes at least a first motor for powering relative movement between the wound dressing material and a cutting tool provided within the container, the method including using the first motor for powering relative movement between the wound dressing material and a cutting tool.

50. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes at least a first motor for powering a packaging mechanism provided within the container, the method including using the first motor for powering the packaging mechanism.

51. The method of claim 45, wherein the base includes a gas pump capable of pumping a gas into the container, the method including using the gas pump to pump a gas into the container

52. The method of claim 45, further comprising transmitting ultraviolet light into the interior of the container through a UV-passing window.

53. A method of manufacturing a custom wound dressing corresponding to an identified wound, the method comprising:

providing a container having a sterile interior and having within said sterile interior;

a wound dressing material, at least a first tool for operating on selectable parts of the wound dressing material, and at least one relative movement mechanism that can provide controlled relative movement between the wound dressing material and the at least first tool; and

controlling from outside the container, relative movement between the wound dressing material and the at least first tool so as to selectively operate on parts of the wound dressing material corresponding to the identified wound.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein the first tool includes a liquid dispenser structured to dispense a preselected first dispensable liquid selectively onto regions of the wound dressing material and said controlling from outside the container of the relative movement causes the first dispensable liquid to be selectively dispensed onto regions of the wound dressing material corresponding to the identified wound.

55. An apparatus for manufacturing a custom wound dressing corresponding to an identified wound, the apparatus comprising:

a container having a sterile interior;

a wound dressing material within the container;

at least a first tool within the container, the tool for operating on selectable parts of the wound dressing material; and

at least one relative movement mechanism within the container that can provide

56. The apparatus of claim 55, wherein the wound dressing material is at least partially disposed on a material supplying roll provided within the case.

57. The apparatus of claim 56, wherein the wound dressing material is at least partially disposed on a material take-up roll provided within the case.

58. The apparatus of claim 55, wherein the first tool is a first dispenser structured to selectively dispense a corresponding first dispensable liquid to a selected portion of the wound dressing material, the first dispensable liquid being a member of the group consisting of a moisturizing solution, a water repellant, and an adhesive.

59. The apparatus of claim 58, wherein the at least first dispenser includes a capillary tube having a first end coupled to a source of said first dispensable liquid and an opposed end defining a nozzle for delivering the first dispensable liquid to the wound dressing material.

60. The apparatus of claim 55, further comprising:

a frame;

a stage provided on the frame;

a dressing material dispenser carried by the frame and adapted for dispensing a portion of the wound dressing material onto the stage;

a cutting tool; and

a cutting tool carrying mechanism disposed on the frame and structured for providing
